Are diamonds hard or strong?

I'm sure you smarties know the answer. I didn't. It all came on the back of "Can you destroy a diamond easily?" question... And I learnt that you cannot dissolve them! No acid will apparently touch them. But yes .. they are hard to cut, however not strong and easily smashed with a hammer.

So what random questions have you found answers to recently? And did they made you go: oh, wow!

Strong is a generic term, and is very subjective. It isnt measurable where as hardness is. There are various technical ways to categorise strength.

Yes diamonds are hard. Their molecular composition is very unique, the molecular bonds are strong and hard to break, giving it it's 'strength'.

And for the 2nd part. I didn't learnt his recently but it intrigued me.

Glass is technically a liquid and not a solid. Its a super cooled liquid. If you look at really old windows, like in churches, the glass is thicker at the bottom than it is at the top because gradually over time it lows towards the bottom. Very fascinating fact to me

I did notice that ! Im a huge fan of an old window. Especially if it has a stained glass.

I wish I paid more attention to science. Now I find these things fascinating I found myself lacking some knowledge too. Never too late to learn.

diamonds are hard but brittle, most things classed as hard are as they have no flexability, glass is hard, but a sharp blow will break it, same thing

It's an amorphous solid and the thicker at the bottom thing is a myth, that is down to manufacturing methods.

Graphene was first isolated at the University of Manchester in 2004 by Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov. They won the Nobel for their work.
