Not sure how I feel

When a guy say's

"You have a great body for someone in their 50's"

Or "you look great considering your age"

Yes it's a compliment and I should be thankful, but it always seems to be a bit of backhanded compliment.

How do others feel about this??

Once again I am very grateful for the kind complimentary word's but also feel that why mention my age?

Perhaps I'm too sensitive!

We get this…’you have great boobs for your age’

‘You look hot for a silver fox’

Both compliments but both have that element of ‘erm, thanks!’ too

You have a great body for any age I think people say it because it gets harder to maintain a good body as you get older so it indicates a lot more hard work and dedication then of you were younger. It's actually a big compliment but I know what you mean. I try to to say it because I think it can be misinterpreted even though I mean it as admiration for the work put in.

Yeah I get this a lot as a fat person.

"you have such a pretty face for a big girl"

"your body is so great, I love BBWs"

And my personal favourite... "you're so pretty, you'll get ALL the boys once you lose the weight!"

Just remember that people aren't doing it to be nasty. Even though it hurts

If it's someone close to me I'll let them know that what they've said is shitty. But a lot of the time I cba so just roll my eyes and accept the "compliment".

I think it depends on how well you know the person though. If it's a stranger I don't really care, but if it's friends and family it really pisses me off.

When me and my best friend were still getting to know each other, he would pay me compliments like "you're so beautiful for a chubby (lol) girl, me and *our other friend* talk about it all time.", or "you carry your weight so well, on other big women it doesn't suit them at all but you really pull it off (insulting both me and other women in one fell swoop lol)".

Then one night I got really d*unk and told him how I felt when he said shit like that. He was really remorseful and ever since then he always tells me I'm beautiful with zero caveats he always tries to make me feel good, I love him so much

No, I don’t think your sensitive, I agree that they are not full complements and can’t see why it’s a factor in anything. A bit like when people say ‘sorry if I’ve done something wrong’, it kinda comes across as neutral and not a authentic statement.

The thing is these folk don't intend to be insulting and everyone is different to what terminology they don't like used towards them.

Some are probably more obvious than others but still if everyone decided they shouldn't say things because it may cause upset to an individual then the chances are nobody would say anything to anybody.

It is meant as a compliment. It would be more of a compliment without the 'for your age', but I guess they feel it is 'more' of a compliment.

But then I'm not one to take a compliment anyway, on anything.

Iv done this before on accident.

I complimented a bloke on his hair as he had a great head of hair for a bloke of his age.

I mean he had a great head of hair full stop but for his age when most men his age are receding or bald it really was good.

I didn’t mean it in any kind of back handed way and I think when people say these compliments you can tell if they are being twats or not.

Daft thing is deep down I kinda know that a size 8/10 with few if any stretch marks after 2 kids and being 53 is pretty good going in the grand scheme of things but I just can't accept the compliment regardless cos wellllllll I'm 53 and don't actually do anything very much in terms of diet or exercise so it's luck over effort really and the age is irrelevant
