TV on standby but won’t turn on!

Any techies out there ?! My TV won’t turn on, the stand by light is on, when I press the remote the light flickers but the TV won’t turn on, I think it might be the circuit board, is it worth taking the TV apart and replacing this, especially when I don’t know if that’s the problem and I don’t really know what I’m doing. Or do I cut my loses and by a new TV, I dunno how long TVs should last, this one is an Hitachi if that’s any help ?!

At the risk of sounding like a techie, you need to switch off/on the power and it should reset. Don't switch off leaving it on standby overnight.

Cheshire

just a couple of thumps on top of the telly or the side will always resolve the problem. Never seen a 70s TV show

Disconnect all power to it for a couple of hours. Then plug it back in and try again

Definitely the circuit board so get in and replace that. Remember that the best way to remove it is with a claw hammer

Possibly remote rather than TV - does it have a manual on/off on set you can try?

Yeah, I’ve tried all that, every possible combination of that, it’s turned off all day when I’m at work, even when I plug it back in, nothing happens, it’s been like it for months.

I work in audio visual but not really the repair side of things

Basic things to try are do a hard power down on the TV for starters (yeah believe me some people wouldn't think this)

Can you not turn it on at the TV in the short term?

Could be something wrong with the ir sensor at the TV end (think you can buy sensors and just plug it into the TV and use that rather than the built in 1)

How old is the TV?

Best thing to do as well is Google the model and fault and more than likely someone else has had the same issue...this will tell you it is repairable or ber

I think I’ve had it about 5 years, not really used that much, I don’t know if there was a power cut when I was at work and then it came back on and it damaged something inside. There’s a switch on the side that I’ve turned on and off, but it just switches on to stand by mode, the TV doesn’t turn on.

Your TV sounds as if it has attained sentience and decided you are no longer it’s master. The poor quality electricity you have been feeding it has come home to roost and it will no longer entertain you for such paltry pickings.

Try changing your electricity supplier

I tend to change my tvs every 5 years myself (down to faults to my last 2 going faulty and not worth repairing due to cost)

Sounds like it's time for a new 4k TV haha but if u don't use it that much then you can get full hd cheap as chips these days

Have you tried stroking it gently, whispering sweet nothings to it, teasing it with a slow strip, kissing its sharp, flat corners…….have you lost your mojo, City?

Bristol

Try unplugging it from the mains leaving it a few mins then without plugging it in press the main on off button for 20 seconds.

Plug back into the mains and switch on with the main power button

"Change batteries in remote?

He's tried that

My remote can be a bit iffy, years of being dropped, I give it a bash on my leg, seems to do the trick.

Your not far, do you want to have a bash on my leg?

If you've done all the obvious batteries, power etc then it could be a capacitor that's gone. You say the light flickers when you press the remote suggesting it's receiving the command but can't act on it. A capacitor kickstarts the t.v. into life if you will. Probably time for a new one but could be repaired.

Hatfield

Take the back of make sure it’s connected to the mains wet your finger and put it on connections if nothing happens probably a faulty component but if it’s not faulty no need to worry about it switching as you will have an afternoon appointment with the undertaker

Manchester (he/him)

I had a similar issue and ended up having to get a new TV.

I’m thinking that it was so smart that it objected to the crap that I watched on a regular basis. That’s the last time that I put ITV on!

Did you smack the TV and shout at it?

That's what I would have done.

Is it a Samsung?

My daughters telly was doing exactly the same thing aroundvthe time her warranty ran out.

Fortunately, Samsung repaired it under warranty.

It was the main system board

Glad you fixed it. Make sure to clean and remove jizz from remote each time you wank to Top Gear. You won't have this problem in the future if you follow my advice.

That's always the second thing the helpdesk suggest:

1. Have your switched it off and back on?

2. Have your removed the previous load of jizz from it?

99% of issues solved with those two steps

The Town by The Cross

1. Change the batteries in the remote

2. Take all plugs ariels whatever out of sockets and put them all back in again.

If nowt happens - try a universal remote.

If nowt happens phone your provider

If nowt happens nick next doors telly.
