If england win the euros, should there be a holiday?

That is what currently is being considered as boris faces pressure for bank holiday, so far more than 100000 people have signed a petition calling for monday to be designated a bank holiday if england beat italy in sundays final. I kind of like the idea, what about you?

If they do the same for other sports then yes. But national football has been flagging behind almost every other sports for decades.

We've won top honours in,( I'm talking team GB not just England)

Rugby, cricket, tennis,track and field event's, triathlons, swimming, Motorsport, cycling there's probably many more but point being.

Just because it's football and people want a reason to get extra pissed up and smash shit up it seem as a reason for an extra holiday.

Naaa save it for a word cup win that would be genuine cause for celebration.

It's only the euro's.

Would rather know now , so I can have a few beers while enjoying the match and hopefully winning and celebrating.as I start work early on a Monday , no point starting to celebrate at 10 pm , be better to make it certain now so company will no what staff will turn up and not having a load of no shows and people throwing sickies

On the interview that I saw he didn't say he was considering it. He was asked "if we win should we have an emergency back holiday" and he said...lets not tempt fate, to which I thought he meant not to tempt fate to them winning.

There will not be a bank holiday as its a legal entity and you can't sort that out between Friday and Monday.

The additional bank holiday next year has more than 12 months notice and has caused issues.

There was no bank holiday when we won the world Cup and why would a sporting achievement create a national holiday?

we personaly dont follow football, we like motorsport, so if lewis wins the silverstone gp do we get a holiday then?

I’m a huge football fan but I don’t think it should be. Mainly because bank holidays don’t support or recognise those working in the hospitality sector or emergency services.

It only gives office workers, non shift workers or retail workers days off, so it’s completely unfair as to who benefits.

Most bosses or businesses are being mindful of what this means to many (our local school is starting later and many businesses closed early or are being flexible) so that’s enough.

Besides, it’s too late to organise a holiday now

I am with you on the sentiment.

Although I do get the gladiatorial nature of sport and to be fair if booing a national anthem and cheering a goal enables people to vent their national pride, then we can class that as progress over fights to the death and jingoistic sabre rattling.

Great plan. Because bank holidays mean that absolutely everyone in the country gets to not go to work, obviously. Actually, that's an excellent plan.

So no hospitality industry, no days out..... oh, yeah, and no emergency services or medical services.

People who want a day off for their hangovers should book a day off for their hangovers. And stop crying for an extra bank holiday every time something they're excited about happens.

For many football is a thing of national pride yet that soon disappears for all of us when they go on the rampage after the match and set about destroying anything they can.

No, total lack of notice for people who would have to close businesses and let staff know having to wait until after the match to know, then as an employer, having to spend your Sunday evening trying to let everyone know. Can you imagine closing all schools with that last minute notice for parents who work in sectors without public holidays (eh NHS)?

No one thinks about the people who lead businesses/organisations.

And winning in a sport (regardless of track record) is still a bullshit reason for a bank holiday.

The over excited attitude oozing out of people is one of the reasons why I partially don't want them to win. There are other reasons too. But christ, you would think this country had finally done something actual worthwhile of late.

It would be nice, but christ, some people are in some serious need of a reality check. The actions of people that will follow a win will highley likely taint the whole thing - that's a general observation, not aimed at any single person.

not so sure, look at how many people go to or watch wimbledon, at the end of the day all sports are followed by a minority, i have alot of friends/aquaintances and of all those probably only 3 or 4 follow football, probably 10 or so follow tennis, and all follow motorsport, but i work in that field so it follows that alot of people i know also do, but it does make my point, i dont get football, never have, but if people want to follow it then good on them, but dont shove it down my throat, in the same way that i dont with my interests, and ive never seen another sport where trashing a town after a match is aceptable, football fans do themselves no favours, and as to what it costs to police matches, well. most fans of other sports manage to watch an event without trashing everything. im sure some will arguue this and jump on me for my views, but i used to live nr the football stadium southampton, when a match was on, it was a no go area, i used to stay at home and not go out, no other sport causes this!

Highly questionable if I'll ever find myself holding up such a trophy. Bear in mind I've been in this scene a lot of years, it's surprising what's come out in the wash, and I've been round the block many times over the decades when swinging was a bit of a elitist pursuit when only higher end of society could afford the cost of contact magazines, and Polaroid camera photos.

Why? Businesses are already struggling after the effects of the Pandemic, and many really couldn't afford to have yet another Bank Holiday closure.

Why is it that Football has to be put on a pedestal to be almost revered?

Why not do the same for Rugby as suggested earlier, Lewis Hamilton in Formula 1, the British Olympic Squad for their achievements in London all those years ago, Andy Murray when he won Wimbledon a few years back?

Football is yet another Sport which produces important memories, creates records in its own right, but it's no more or less important than other Sporting greats.

We don't need another Bank Holiday just for yet another footie tournament win.

not so sure, look at how many people go to or watch wimbledon, at the end of the day all sports are followed by a minority, i have alot of friends/aquaintances and of all those probably only 3 or 4 follow football, probably 10 or so follow tennis, and all follow motorsport, but i work in that field so it follows that alot of people i know also do, but it does make my point, i dont get football, never have, but if people want to follow it then good on them, but dont shove it down my throat, in the same way that i dont with my interests, and ive never seen another sport where trashing a town after a match is aceptable, football fans do themselves no favours, and as to what it costs to police matches, well. most fans of other sports manage to watch an event without trashing everything. im sure some will arguue this and jump on me for my views, but i used to live nr the football stadium southampton, when a match was on, it was a no go area, i used to stay at home and not go out, no other sport causes this!"

The fact you have that many people that you know that are even interested in tennis is quite possibly scewed by your class and your social and friend group. Not saying you are or are not, but alot of people involved in motorsport are not working class atleast when we are talking closed circuit racing, from my anecdotal experience from knowing some of the Palmer lot a few years ago (I also catered for Nick Tandys brothers wake) They are certainly wealthier than most. If you did a poll of the population I would bet most watch football then maybe Rugby with I would guess either tennis or cricket being third.

Just googled the popularity in the UK. I am correct by a very large margin with 45% of the country with an interest in football and 23% with Tennis.

I'm not arguing for or against. Tbh its probably not a great idea because of it being quite short notice for business, especially stuff like pubs/restaurants. And ofcourse there will always be people that will still have to work on that day.

But I can also see the merit of it, as tbh alot of us have had a shit year or two and the whole thing is undoubtedly a huge moral boost for a large part of the country. Plus why should we work so much in the first place? What's wrong with some extra free time for alot of us, which even if you dont like football you surely would appreciate?

I don’t think anyone would disagree with more paid holidays, we had a holiday for Prince Williams wedding and I’m sure more of the country like football over the royal family but either way I disagree with them. Also surely people in jobs that have to work those days must get a a in leui

You would hope so. But as far as I know stuff like days in leui are down to the individual business. When I worked for a large pub/restaurant chain we got fuck all. I would agree with it being made law if you work on a bank holiday you get either double/triple pay and or a day in lieu maybe, something like that.

They dont actually say what they get payed. But a paper worked it out a while back I think from how much money had been donated which was £5m at that time. I'm not sure if they get goal or win bonuses. But I know the US team does.

They dont actually say what they get payed. But a paper worked it out a while back I think from how much money had been donated which was £5m at that time. I'm not sure if they get goal or win bonuses. But I know the US team does.

Ofcourse you could be cynic and say they just dont give it all away like they say they do lol. a football player donating their international fee to charity is probably the equivalent to us putting a pound in the tin for a poppy "

Could also be some sort of tax write off maybe. Dunno enough about accounting. I prefer to believe theres no funny stuff with this though.

I may get very condemned for this. In my opinion . If you are representing your country then you do not get psid for doing so. They get enough from clup and advertising etc. ?

I dont think they get praised that much overall for what they may do for charity really other than a certain few recent exceptions.

But yeah I'm not necessarily for or against there being a bank holiday. In reality I don't care much either way it doesn't effect me

They have kicked a bloody ball around a field for a few games.

What happened to calling for a Bank Holiday to celebrate the hard work and devotion that the Drs, Nurses and healthcare workers have put in over the last 17 months. A job that actually matters. We can call to celebrate the sporting achievements but when Drs and Nurses and Health care workers put their lives on the line they are given nothing but an offer of a 1% pay rise. Sparkle I'm with you I've never understood why they pay so much to a bunch of grown men to kick a ball round a field then have weeks off for injuries while those hard working people as you say putting there life's on the line get paid peanut
