"For me at 60 life experiences "

I think to be honest you confuse intelligence with wisdom x

Intelligence is the natural ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills, this tends to be more innate within people and not altered by time.

I think that shows education. Not necessarily raw intelligence. Many people who are highly intelligent can’t spell that well. It is a complex thing to assess.

Some of the most intelligent people and greatest philosopher’s I’ve met were scaffolders, there’s a wisdom there, I think it’s constantly putting things up, reaching for the heavens, then taking them down again makes you question things, ultimately everything is futile, but within that there’s a beauty, that everything is finite. Like a great man said to me, give me a degree in common sense any day of the week. Another great man said common sense isn’t so common, some of the most well read people I met couldn’t lack basic common sense, sure they could recite things they read in books, but could they mix a decent gauge of muck, not even close, I’d often end up doing it myself, just one of those things. The wiser bloke I ever met worked in a plumbing supply shop, it’s like if Einstein never went into science, but sold stop cocks instead.

For me (and in the context of Fabs) it is not about formal education although that can be part of it but not necessarily.

Neither is it spelling, maths, geometry or any of the traditional concepts taught at school.

It is about an ability to think in abstract terms, to think creatively, to challenge other thoughts and to be sufficiently self-aware to spot your own illogical conclusions and blind spots.

This is the crucial part!

Well-read, well-versed in some of the things that interest me is a bonus.

I measure it quite literally on if you talk to people, are they listening and engaging, or just hearing but switched off?

Then after that, do they have something to say that piques your interest?

Intelligence is the willingness and openness to exchange ideas.

I concur. A large component of intelligence is reasoning. To memorise word for word or indeed, large amounts of information does not necessarily mean that one has understood or rationalised the said information.

By the level of success you achieve for the amount of effort you have devoted to your vocation, avocation, interest, hobby or whatever.

Intelligent individuals learn quickly what works, initially, and what will work in different situations with different people; they learn from experience.

Unintelligent people make mistakes repeatedly; they adopt the wrong approach, choose the wrong people or groups, choose the wrong time to act, etc.

Intelligent people are infinitely flexible, adaptable, socially adept and consequently are more successfully.

Those with most modest innate abilities stumble blindly from one crisis to the next, ad infinitum, leaving a trail of wreckage in their wake.

Intelligent individuals skilfully flow through life, masters of all they survey.

The know how to play the game, every game, with consummate ease.

I absolutely love the way you describe intelligence and its applications - however, I do want to point out that it is not always as easy as you state in the seductive way you have defined it:

"Intelligent individuals skilfully flow through life, masters of all they survey"

There are extremely intelligent people who are plagued by depression (some of this associated with the fact they ARE ABLE to see many things for what they really are) rather than through rose tinted spectacles of an Express consumer. (Just chose this tabloid randomly, no offense intended)

I don't look at intelligence as just someone who has a degree. To me intelligence is someone who has common sense and who can talk about things sensibly and not be afraid to speak their mind without resorting to insults and derogatory comments to anyone who disagrees with them.

If only people could walk in others peoples shoes, see through their eyes and use compassion, thoughtfulness and be kind - we're all intelligent in our own way but need to use it wisely. This thread asked ‘How do you measure intelligence’

As we can see, people measure it by their own standards, whether it be good diction, emotional intelligence, musicality, ability to speak multiple languages, academic excellence, and so on.

For me, at its most basic level, it is how early in life did one look at a square shaped object and immediately recognise that it can only fit through the square hole.

Isn't the point of "formal" education, that it's a broad brush to equip the majority with a set of tools and with the motivation to learn that allows you to go off and be self sufficient in developing your own intelligence should you so choose? Learning to learn if you like.? The fact someone can't do something practical like mix a bucket of muck is no more a sign of lack of intelligence than being able to solve differential calculus. The ability to apply or impart knowledge, skill, experience, enjoy, create, decision making, recall and memory, self awareness, organisation surely all form a part of what we label intelligence.
