Middle age

When does it start?

Average life expectancy in the UK was 78.7 for males and 82.7 for females (in 2020)

So, does middle age start between 39 & 41, or is it more a state of mind?

Also, why are people often 'put out' by being classed as middle aged?

I'm 41 so guess I'm middle aged

The term makes me sound older than I feel I think.

Also no one likes to be reminded of their own mortality and that they're over halfway through their life

Pretty sure that middle age officially starts at 40 but that is a terrifying thought as it means that you have less time to go than you have been on the planet.

I prefer to think of it as a state of mind and my mind still thinks I am in my 20s

La la land

I'm middle aged and it's not a term I mind to be honest. I've lost too many friends so getting here is an achievement.

Why people don't like it, guess it's because to them it sounds old. And we are old to say a 18 year old and a spring chicken to a 90 year old. It's all about perspective

One of my best friends is in his early seventies. He is fit, smart, fun and has a punch like a hammer. One of my best friends is in his early forties and is overweight, not very active and has no real social life.

Which one is middle aged?

Because they want to be eternally youthful, society says there's value in youth. Look how many people claim they look 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 years younger than they are. Say that they feel like they are only 21 etc. Perhaps middle reminds them they've lived half their life?

I think middle aged starts from 40 and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Saying someone is middle aged is never used to compliment . For me it implies a state of mind, a staid old fashioned person buying elasticated waisted trousers and velcro fastening sandals for comfort unwilling to be adventurous or accept new ideas. Some people commence middle age at 20 .

I'd far rather be called old than middle aged.

I don't mind people saying they feel like they're 21, I can kind of understand that. It's when they say they still act like it and they're 53

We are incredibly lucky to be living in an era and in countries where life expectancy has increased greatly over the last 100 years or so. If we’re also lucky with our personal health and keep in reasonable shape then we can enjoy active lives into our 70s or 80s. So who cares how we label it, let’s just be thankful and embrace those years as they come.

I guess I'm just too darn young to understand how you can feel like you're 21 when you're twice that age.

I don't use middle aged as an insult or a compliment, it's more a matter of fact comment but having read your other post - yeah, I guess it is meant as someone ascribing to a particularly dull lifestyle *suitable* for their age.

It's just a term.

40 is middle aged simply based on numbers, can't argue that.

How you live and view life prob will be static as we're creatures of habit though some will experience events that make them rethink.

I'm WELL past middle age but I'm hardly ready for the knackers yard yet, I think folk relate the term to being past it and old when rally its just as it says, middle age/middle of your life... Enjoy it

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

I do feel like I'm getting "ground rush" sometimes. The end of my life (well, Where I guess it should be ending!) used to seem so far away, but now, I realise that my time is finite and if I'm not careful, some of my unfulfilled plans will outlive me!

Luckily I've got enough food, money, sunshine and a lovely house to enjoy what time I've got left!

I'm going to be 30 in a couple of months and I'm panicking about it, how old I look and feel and how I've wasted the first 30 years of my life so I think I'm going to have a midwife crisis soon!

I've not looked after my health and I have a lot wrong with me, so being honest I may be about half way through my lufe, maybe more. 10 years ago I genuinely didn't think I would make it to 30, and I'm actually really proud of myself for sticking around as long as I have.

There are so many challenges we go through In life and some people are taken from us too soon and never get to experience it so if you reach middle age just be grateful you get to experience it rather than thinking about how long you have left.

It's about what you've achieved, not the age you are.

Some people live to be 100, some are only young when they die so middle age can start at any time

Have fun in life, and enjoy it whilst you can

I definitely want to have more fun in my thirties as I wasted a lot of my youth not putting myself out there and exploring the world.

Let's just go for 40 for either gender.

I think that 'put out' happens as you are in your autumn and only winter and game over is ahead.

I follow the philosophy that I am still here and I don't have time to worry about kicking the bucket ......living is being in the now.... not organising my care home and funeral .....

How I think of it, you take the age you think you will live to, let's say 90. 0-29 you are young, 30-59 you are middle aged, 60-90 you are old.

Doesn't seem to be a popular view with other people, but I don't care what age I am.

I'll be 50 in a week and sometimes I feel that I'd be quite happy in not wanting any new adventures. At the moment I can only call those type of days 'good days'.
