I witnessed the 30 years of hurt thing in 96, now its over 50, are football fans getting a bit over excited, like always?

Wouldn't it be better to save the celebrations until England actually win something?

I mean, the England team bus drove through where I live the other day (I live a few miles from St Georges Park) and local social media nearly peed itself with excitement!

This is what does my head in about international competitions, we haven’t won a thing since 1966, we haven’t even reached a final yet very 2 years we go into competitions with this deluded idea that we are the favourites!

Don’t get me wrong we’ve always had potential and I’d love it if we won but the constant overhype does nothing but embarrass us when we inevitably don’t

Why not get caught up in the euphoria though? Ok, we may slip up and not win it but part of that excitement is in the journey. Its about the highs and lows. I feel it would be incredibly boring not enjoying it while we are in it, what’s the point in watching? Its like not cheering your teams goals in case the other team scores during the game. People just need to relax a bit I think. The world is a shit enough place as it is so it’s nice to have something to cheer, if only for a short time. . Xxx

Im mot much of a football fan and try to stay away from the 'hype' and 'histeria'.....but your post has made me think again - maybe Im just being a bit miserable and curmudgeonly?

Im going to try and embrace the spirit and attitude you have and enjoy it instead of knocking it.

The whole ‘it’s coming home’ thing is a bit of fun, hope, excitement.. everyone has been through all the failures through the years, and most people are just waiting for the disappointment to happen at any time .. but if you can’t dream of winning and enjoy each victory as you progress, what’s the point?

That’s what makes tournament football the best, particularly after the group stages when it’s sudden death, the rollercoaster of emotion ... joy, elation, and ultimately, except for one nation, pain..

How boring it would be if you dispassionately sat there all stoically unless you actually win the tournament and then, and only then, celebrate?

I doubt if England will win the tournament, they never do (other than once, or twice if you count Le Tournoi - those that know, know ) but that still didn’t stop me celebrating like a loon at Wembley on Tuesday. Live for the moment!!

I like the feel good factor it creates and it’s a great excuse to meet up with friends.

If I’m completely honest though, I do find great amusement in football fans.

Tournament started with them all saying the team was shit and they will struggle to get through the group.

Now the same team are ‘playing fucking brilliantly’ and it’s coming home!

Football fans are hilarious

Agree. Especially after the past couple of years we’ve had. I’m a football fan anyway but most of me just wants it to carry on just to life the spirits of the nation. We need it

It's the hope and the emotions it raises that does it - trust me as a Spurs fan who has never seen his team win the league (they last did so 60 years ago) yet come close on a number of occasions, I know.

Your team, whether it be club football or International, start to do well, and you can't help but start to hope and get excited by it and get caught up in the emotions of it and when it's a national team that gets highlighted even further as it's not just supporters of your club getting excited but a large chunk of the nation - further fuelled by the media and even things like supermarkets having related promotions.

Yes, we get caught up in it, and to a non-football fan it's difficult to explain why we do, but it really is raw emotion and hope that drives us - and for some that can get out of hand.

Personally (and probably as a result of being a Spurs fan for 50 odd years!!) I have a level of realism and know that with every high there is usually a low, but there is still hope that this time, more than any other time....

I feel that trying to explain to non football fans exactly why fans get excited, hopeful, anxious and hundreds of other conflicting emotions, is like trying to explain the colour blue to a dolphin.

It probably just ends in the same answer; it just is! It’s passionate, it’s joyful and it’s cathartic in it’s pain.

The old quote “nothing else means so little but matters so much” is a fitting response
