Statues of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II have been toppled in Canada. What's going on here. Why is Great Britain hated this much?

Colonial past and suspected involvement death of 6,000 children might have stirred up some anger?

Because we conquered the world by stealing nations, murdering and pillaging as we went. None of the territories outside this crappy little island belong to us and it's about time they were given back to the people we stole them from.

Were the schools not Catholic schools that murdered the children?

Are we asking all the Canadians to leave so we can gift the land back to the natives?

GB expanded like any other nation. In our case overseas rather than by land. Russia, China etc were never just that big to begin with. They engulfed other peoples.

The US wanted the extermination of the Native Americans and in the War of 1812 the First nations sided with Canada and GB.

However in the long term in Canada they forced Natives to assimilate. I can’t explain these recent finds but I’d say I’d stand by the Native Americans any day and support the wrongs wrought against them by Europeans north and south of the continents.

Here we go again....bad people did bad shit so long ago that it wasn't so bad back then. Everyone judges them by today's standards to either ease their guilt or further their aim of trying to tear the world apart. It's in the past, it can ever be resolved. We have to learn from it and move on. Just like today, rich people controlled poor people.

The question of "Native Americans" is an interesting one. The people who currently claim this title are proven to have emigrated from North Asia approx 13000 years ago and are known officially as the "Clovis" people. There is increasing archaeological evidence that there were people living in America before this, and that they were slaughtered by the migrating Clovis people. It is believed by mainstream archaeologists that the Clovis people assimilated original cultures, possibly even stole a lot of their customs, deities etc but has proven difficult to continue to investigate as much of the evidence is to be found on "tribal" lands.

This raises the question - how long does a people have to occupy a land before they are considered "native", and who makes that decision?

Previously when statues were toppled, they were of long dead people.

Our Queen is very old, has just lost her husband and has worked tirelessly for good causes all her life.

How must she be feeling?

She is not responsible for the children's deaths.

Its thuggery plain and simple.

Very true. When I wrote my comment I was sure the Native Americans themselves had displaced millions before them. This is what current ideology fails on. The idea that doing the right thing was something Europeans especially should have been doing 1500 to 1900.

Nobody topples Ghengis in Mongolia or talks hatefully of Rameses in Egypt.

When I think of the world until 1939, I think of brutality across all nations. Don’t cherry pick history folks.

I’m not sure that recognising historical facts for what they were - god or bad - is ‘beading oneself up”. There’s not a lot that we can do about it these days except recognise, acknowledge and maybe if appropriate apologise.

Toppling statues seems to be in vogue these days too. Maybe we should blame TickTock

"Why is Great Britain hated this much?"

There are around 193 countries in the world.

The British have attacked or invaded 171 of them.

Read All The Countries We've Ever Invaded (and the Few We Never Got Round To) by Stuart Laycock.

It's seen as uncool to be patriotic.

We can be proud of our heritage and ashamed of the bad stuff.

We have really done no worse than pretty much all major nation's over the years.

I don't see people rushing out to push over Viking status or demand the Colosseum in Rome be knocked down due to its bloody past.

It's seems our royal family and historical figures have become a target of hate crimes by a mob mentality.

"Are the English hated around the world ?"

Look mate, if you want to think that you will think it.

I lived in the Republic of Ireland for five years. I got reminded of English colonial rule and the famine and the war of independence every time I had a beer with an Irishperson, yet it was never directed at me personally, only at my "master" race. I don't have a problem with that, because I have the cojones to study history and conclude that however emotive and tearful in their beer the Irish get about their 1916 martyrs, they were right. Ireland did deserve independence from England. And they've been better for it ever since.
