Hi Guys!

I’ve been a member of this site off & on for a few years now. I’ve had some amazing experiences and made some lasting friendships because of this site. During my time on Fab, one thing this constantly surprises me is the fact that people are so forthcoming with their personal details.

In my experience, you have 3 types of Fabbers: The Out & Proud Swingers with Face Pics and more besides. The Discreetly Out Swingers, that have their ‘personal’ pics but no/private face pics, and the ones that have no pics at all on their profile due to ‘Their Job’ or whatever other reason or comfort level of member. I myself am in the ‘Discreetly Out’ category.

All three are completely fair enough for each and every member. However, in the last few weeks, I’ve seen members in the latter 2 categories display their Social Media handles for folk to get in contact with them. Again, fair enough, but their SocMed handles contain their name or other identifying info, which completely overrides their risk adverse profile.

I’m an IT guy. I’ve worked in various roles within the industry and here’s the kicker, people are genuinely lax when it comes to what they share on SocMed. And I’m not getting at people, guidelines are confusing on what or not you should be sharing and who to. But surely, if you have a certain messenger handle you use on mainstream SocMed sites, if you value your privacy on sites like Fab, then maybe you shouldn’t use said same handle on Fab?

All it takes is one Tom, Dick or Sally bad actor to stick that handle in Google or FB and see what comes up. And given the fact that folks tend to use the same SocMed id/handle over various sites then that’s just asking for trouble. And that’s before we get to selfies. People are lazy. It’s not a derogatory comment, it’s fact. If someone takes a bomb ass selfie, they will post it allover…. FB, Insta, Tik. Tok, Fab. All it takes is for someone to do a Reverse Google Image Search on that selfie and, well, Bob’s your Aunties Fanny. That could lead to your Insta/FB profile, which leads to your personal info, family snaps, DoB, address etc.

I’ve even seen folk post their mobile numbers in their status update. Great if you have a burner or Black Book 2nd Sim, not so great if it’s your personal or Business Mobile.

And before you know it, someone on Fab knows exactly who & where you are. It’s stalker and/or black. mail fodder.

And before Fab Admins start on me, I’m not saying don’t post anything on Fab, far from it. But THINK about what you are posting. Create a separate Messenger Handle, Use unique photos only for this site. Don’t post anything that you use for mainstream sites.

Peace.

Well said.

I've hopefully covered my bases, always tried to due to old job.

On the desktop I genrally use a vpn. The one area I'm not sure of is the meta data in images. On some i think ive turned off geo tagging. I'm also planning to switch to signal instead of whatapp

I try to be really careful.. I also wonder about the metadata in photos.. Does it survive the upload process?

Totally agree. I few years ago I made the mistake of posting a photo both on here and on my Facebook page (obviously a clothed one lol). A guy almost immediately messaged using my real name and saying he knew who I was and would tell everyone if I didn't meet him. It was scary, and I learned a valuable lesson!

I’m quite surprised that people need lessons in internet safety but here we go!

Just as you shouldn’t give your personal details out or ‘cross pollinate’ pictures on SM accounts, you shouldn’t give out any information that might be used as passwords (favourite films, pets names, mothers maiden names), often these happen within ‘games’ and alter birthdays by a few days/weeks (not years guys, yes I’m looking at you!).

*gallic shrug*

Good points! I even swapped my handle in here that overlapped with my Fetl### name and I have a "website birthday" I use for sites like this too. No overlapping photos and much as I dislike kik, I've gone back to it as recently changed phones without thinking through my security settings, and some of my Fab contacts on WhatsApp started appearing in my Facebook friends suggestions so speedy resets and blocks put in place!

Brilliant thread! So easily done - using different birthdates can help as well.

It's weird because Fab is the only place I have a face picture on the internet. I'm pretty much a ghost on the internet.
