One that I know of, who's long since dead, is John Turnbull. He was known as the painter of the American revolution, and was an aide to Washington during the war.

His painting "The Signing of the Declaration of Independence" is currently hanging in the US Capitol building and was used for the art for the 2 dollar bill.
