EURO 2020 R16 Day 4 : A minor tussle in NW London

Congrats to Spain and Switzerland after their wins yesterday and progression to the Quarter Finals.

A couple of frankly disappointing games though devoid of action or incident so let’s hope for much better tonight in the last of the Round of 16 games tonight.

First up at 5pm, plucky make-weights England play Footballing Titans Germany, who have just about won everything in the World game bar the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

England, it should be added, have only ever won one knockout game in European Championship history, and that was a penalty shootout, so the omens aren’t *that* good for tonight tbh (it’s true, look it up stat fans! )

Then at 8pm it’s Shag’s Sweden vs Ukraine for who gets to play the Germans in Saturday’s Quarter Final in Rome.

The “Anyone but England” brigade will be chomping at the bit to throw English arrogance back in our faces come full time this evening, so hold fire folks, not long now before you can have your time in the sun!

How are you watching, and where are you watching the game? Are you able to leave work early? Are you pulling a sickie?

I’m lucky enough to be sitting my arse on a piece of red plastic somewhere in the HA9 post code and having to pay £3 for a bottle of water later, but I’ll catch up it you all on my return. Keep the thread going for me in my absence, fanks!

Predictions?

I’ll go for:

England 2-0 Germany (heart ) or

England 1-3 Germany (head )

and Sweden 2-0 Ukraine

What do you think?

Who will make the headlines?

Who’ll be crying in the streets of Brent tonight?

I haven’t seen enough from England to be confident, and mentality is so key in these games. I can’t see us winning it to be honest.

Gareth needs to get his team selection right tonight, and I hope he starts by dropping Kane.

Have a England / Germany drinking game.

2 fingers (of drink... I know how your mind works!!) every time 1966 is mentioned, 3 fingers penalties, down a pint if Lineker mentions Nazi war crimes.

I think that Southgate is a tactical genius and has been holding England back tactically in preparation for this exact situation.

Come the kick off he’s going to unleash and onslaught of flowing attacking football that will leave us breathless and will leave all other team quailing at the mere mention of our name.

Kane to get a hat trick

There and to the left a bit

To be honest based on the first three games I'm not holding my breath, but then Germany haven't exactly set the tournament alight either - can't see it being high scoring either way, think both teams may cancel each other out and it being 1-0, which way I wouldn't like to call, but as I said, not holding my breath

That’s exactly right.

There are two competitions in major finals; get through the group, win the tournament.

The fact that 2 of the most impressive teams have gone out in the last 16 shows what happens when you put too much into the first part.

As I'll be busy keeping North Kent safe I'm recording the match to watch when I get home (because this show is live do you want to extend the recording?)...eeerm record plus 1 hour!.

Not wanting to be a harbinger of doom but England NEVER win when it's on the BBC's PLUS we get the return of the England band

Incidentally though I'm not a fan of violence let alone violence at a football game if any of you are in attendance and bump into these twats could you please shove that trumpet up his trumpet

And then what Ukraine bullshit their way to the final (sorry Shag)

Hard one to call as Germany do not look like the team they once were.If Germany are on it then it should be a good win for them as England have looked disjointed and their star player Kane is either carrying a injury or has his mind elsewhere .

Neither team have been that good throughout the group stage, mediocre at times sometimes frustratingly so for their fans..

Sort of thinking they're both due a good game but for us it will depend I think if Gareth goes with his heart and picks Sancho, Saka etc..

Pens is possible but fuck that level of tension...again

Right, heading off to Wembley soon, nervous excitement building!

England have the players, on their day, that can win.. question is do they have the steely mentality to cope with the expectation and pressure? History has shown that the Germans have it in spades so how key will that be on the day?

From M....

Elite performers in any sport can only be at their peak for 6 weeks in a year.

That's a 6 week block, 6 x 1 week period or any permutation of the 6 weeks. In team games you need a big squad.

Olympic athletes are often training four years in advance, for a particular event, down to a particular day, to be at exactly the right point at the right time.

In football, those players have already used up their 6 weeks peak performance throughout the season, so they're never at their best on international duty.

Even if Southgate aims for them to peak in the later stages of this tournament, they won't be at their peak peak.

Same for all teams fortunately.

Adrenalin, pure desire to win, drive, determination and a slice of dumb luck will help.

Freak own goal, poor refereeing decisions, choosing the wrong penalty taker..... All fall into the mix.

Oh to be an England supporter.

I don't really know a lot about football but I'm letting one of the guys finish at 4 today as I'm kind.

I understand that you need to score goals to win a football game and England haven't scored many. I also know that you mustn't let goals in to stand a chance of winning. England have been good at that, so who knows?

I hope England win.

I want England to win but I want them to win convincingly. Not one where we scrape through with a dull performance and a lucky set piece.

We often raise our game for the big games like this one and often lose. I've not seen anything to convince me that we are deserving of a quarter final place yet. Let's hope that changes tonight.

"We beat them 5-1 previously so I can’t see why can’t do it again

Even Heskey scored that day if I recall correctly.

That’s how ignominious the drubbing was; Heskey scored

Of course it was that which led to Germany having a full inquest and led to their 2014 WC win, soooo

There was a story doing the rounds that all commentators had a continuous loop tape.

Every time Heskey got the ball, press button......

"And Heskeys first touch has let him down..... . "

Manchester (he/him)

I think that the team is too cautious.

No Henderson, no Grealish, no Sancho, no Foden or Mount. Two holding midfielders and 2 defensive wingers.

The front 3 are going to be isolated and lack threat.

Southgate has bottled it

It’s going to be a long match

"Do England have an unfair advantage playing at home in a knockout, with an increase in spectator numbers.

If England go on to win the tournament , won't that be the cry from other nations..

Good question.. the answer is not really since Germany played all of their group games in Munich..

yes Fabio and England at wembley.but in knockouts should there be an ( crowd) home advantage?

Also the final is at Wembley..if it's England it's hardly neutral...as I'm English good..but can see the losing finalists

I actually thought the opposite and thought it was quite an attacking line up - both Shaw and Trippier like to get forward, and will link with Saka and Sterling, Phillips is forward thinking, Grealish can always be bought on to change it up.
