Getting away

I really need a break from home, work normal life etc.

I dont normally do anything alone, not great in own company, but I am considering booking a hotel somewhere and catching a train and just getting away from it all.

Other than for work, has anyone else ever done anything like that?

Did you manage to entertain yourself for time you were away?

Yep I've done it. Best ever was one birthday, I just took myself off to the coast in a full Atlantic storm and took photos of waves all day. Really big waves.

I take trips on a motorbike.

Sometimes UK and abroad when allowed.

I often never say I'm going.i just pack a few things and set off. Can ride to places, take in the views, stop at cafes it's good to get away.

I also turn the mobile off and only put it on when needed as I like to disappear

A couple of years ago for my birthday my kids booked me a solo, long weekend in Rome.

There is something to be said for just doing you. .no one else to please, just yourself.

I used to do it often, here and abroad. I’m very used to my own space and occupying myself, can get lost for hours walking or just watching the world go by

Travelling back from work I usually get an over night in Dubai, but I’m not a fan of Dubai. I also get to fly through Istanbul which is a far more stunning city.

I get to walk around the old parts of the city around Galata tower. Walk the old streets down to a Turkish Hamam, have a great coffee and a Turkish bath. And clean away 8 weeks of desert dust, before grabbing some great seafood nearby.

Even just going on day trips to different cities and places of interest is good for your sense of well-being at the moment. I was at the North Yorkshire coast for the day last week and just seeing the sea and going for a paddle has proved to be a big boost. Going abroad is fraught with potential danger at the moment due to the pandemic so you'd be best staying in the UK imo. Hope you have a good time wherever you decide to go..

Somewhere

I enjoy traveling along. It’s relaxing and clears my mind of frustrations from work and home, No timetable or rush for meals.

However, I have traveled alone for a couple of days then met up with a close friend for a little site seeing and a weekend getaway.

I was thinking about this today. I love long train rides on my own and I often tag along with the other half who goes out for the day to have a wander about the town on my own.

But considering booking a hotel on my own just to have my own space and time sounds good right now.

With lock down I've been stuck indoors like most others. I think over the summer when i am off work I'm going to try and get out more on my own, see more of London, visit museums and just get out more.

Yes I’ve done this, although I went abroad to Bali and LA so a little more extreme than jumping on a train. It was a bit lonely at times but I think that’s more due to the fact I wasn’t used to my own company. Entertainment-wise I spent a lot of time out in the day on the beach or wandering around various places, to the point in the evening I just wanted to crash. Do what works for you

I used to go away with work when I was younger and used to really enjoy it.

Now I never get the chance but I would love to. I'm very happy in my own company for short periods and enjoy the opportunity to do my own thing.

You should do it OP! Ideally one with a spa and then you can visit the spa, pamper, read, order room service. You'll come back feeling like a new woman.

Yes I have often gone away alone - I like to read a lot when away so can just chill out. However over last few winters, before Covid, I joined a website www.thelmaandlouise.com which women can use to meet up with others and go away for weekends, short trips or longer. I went to India and Morocco with some lovely people and I organised the trips - several of them have become friends.

I did.

Before I met my lovely Husband.

I had a booking to play MY harp for a couple of hours for an event in Ipswich, so I thought if I am going to travel that far for a couple of hours work I might as well extend the hotel stay an extra night or two, and go visit more of the area.

It was lovely to please myself for a change instead of having to consider the others and do what they all wanted.

Sheer luxury.

I think it shows independence and confidence in a woman. Some people are not good in their own company though or feel the need to be around people all the time. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I can see why some people won't get it.

I imagine it would feel quite a liberating experience. You'll have to report back to us if you go.

I'm off to browse some spa hotels myself now I think

I often (or did before Covid) take myself wild camping. There’s something to be said for going away by yourself and just enjoying the solitude.

I also took a holiday to Croatia by myself…went to the national parks walking, which have the most amazing waterfalls…

Sometimes you miss out on adventures by thinking you can’t do something by yourself

It’s no more dodgy than going away with friends. You still need your common sense and wits about you.

If you don’t normally do anything alone, then maybe try a day trip somewhere first, see how you get on. If enjoy that then extend to add a night away.

Whatever you decide, enjoy

I’ve gone sightseeing around London on my own. I spent the first part of the day, after arriving, buying an Oyster card and just riding the tube to different places and having a wander. Buck Palace, Savoy, Baker St etc.. then second part was watching Liverpool beat Barca 4-0 at Wembley then more sightseeing, Cenotaph, Downing St etc…was very enjoyable

I sometimes take the kids away with my sister and her children, Mr then takes this as an opportunity to go on holiday by himself (or just him and the dog). He’s been happy holidaying solo since he was 18.

I totally feel that, I love going away by myself! I even went to Japan by myself (half business half leisure trip) and found it entertaining

Id say do it, get on that train and book a room and just enjoy some alone time. Even being in a different space will feel like a breath of fresh air x

I would love to do a European city break on my own. Me and my husband get on really well together when we travel but I think it's a different experience on your own. I'm quite happy sitting outside a cafe watching the world go by on my own.

I love to travel alone. I love hotels, love new places, and I'm incredibly selfish so I don't want to compromise on where I go or what I do.

It's also briiant being able to head off at the drip of a hat, without having to arrange timing to fit round someone else's commitments.

There are some countries I've travelled to where I felt a bit vulnerable as a woman alone, but it's thankfully very rare.

It is frustrating. I once hid all day on a ship just to escape the well meaning souls on board. My cabin man got me up at 6, found me a place on deck where I shouldn’t be and provided me with my breakfast, lunch and drinks throughout the day, along with the tales of those trying to hunt me down. It was a blissful day lost in my own little world watching the Nile flow by
