EURO 2020 : ROUND OF 16 Day 1

Jump to newest

After a couple of days off (oh how we missed it!) we’re finally into the knockout stages where the fun REALLY begins!

Every game has some jeopardy now, and every game has a winner who will progress, and a loser who, for them the tournament is over!

Today plucky little Wales find themselves in the unusual position of having all the neutrals wanting them to lose (well except for us friendly forum types of course) as they come up against Christian Eriksen’s Denmark in Amsterdam at 5pm.

Should a good one this, almost too close to call I think, the Danes will have the majority of the crowd after Welsh fans have been restricted from travel so will that be telling?

Later at 8pm at Wemberleeeee it’s Italy v Austria, Italy one of the teams that really caught the eye in the group stages.

I predict:

Wales 1-1 Denmark (Wales win on penalties)

Italy 3-0 Austria

What do you think? Who will make headlines tonight?

Italy looked good but we all know that the form you take in to the knockout stages doesn't always continue in to the knockout stages but I do believe that they will win tonight. Wales have always had a few really talented players in their teams but never really do any good and I think they will out of the tournament tonight.

I'm not so sure everyone wants Denmark to win. I don't. I want Wales and they have something about them. If it goes to pens they better hope bale isn't taking one! But Wales can't defend for toffee, theybhave the worst defence by a mile... Allowing 59 shots at goal in 3 games and coincidentally are playing the team who have had the most shots at goal by a mile in Denmark who have had 40 shots at goal (compare that to a mighty 15 by England)... So the Welsh keeper is going to be kept very busy tonight.

I have Italy to win by a hateful tonight... 4 or 5 maybe. They will run Austria ragged. Plus don't they look immaculate too? (not that you'd expect anything different) but if it were the world cup of handsome they'd have won by now.

Most of the world will be supporting Denmark today after what happened to Christian Erikson but if Bale is on top form Wales could have a chance.

It should be an easy win for Italy against Austria at Wembley later tonight as they played so well I'm the group stages and the Italians have now been unbeaten for almost 30 matches.

A place where others reside (nr Oxford)

Wales 1 - 2 Denmark. Think the Danes are riding a wave of being carefree and enjoyment since Eriksen and will go in with less nerves and expectatiln

Italy 5 - 0 Austria

Time for the Italians to turn it on today and gear up for the most difficult quarter final. Goals for Locatelli and Insigne

Well I’ve been out and not seen the Wales game but had the radio commentary instead, unlucky Wales sounds like you got Denmark just at the wrong time.

Now Denmark off to face the winner of the Netherlands v the Czech Republic for the right to play England in the Semi Final at Wembley (or Germany, or Sweden or Ukraine)

I was in Wembley earlier but sadly couldn’t stop by to attend the Italy v Austria game up next ...

How do we think that one will go? Italy at a canter is my prediction.

Only 22,500 in Wembley tonight, but double that on Tuesday before jumping up to 60,000+ for the Semis and beyond. Will be great to see Wembley almost full again as long as it’s all Covid-safe of course.

Yeah, this thread has been quality up until that .

Denmark deserved winners tonight. Very proud of Wales though - rookie manager thrown in the deep end and young squad overall.

Wales fans knew it was an achievement to be there, and a really good achievement to get past the group. No reason to be too sad.

Players look leggy tonight - all the travel didn’t help, and maybe Page’s inexperience showed a bit.

Happy, overall.

Tbh their is no chance of that happening. I have Scottish and Welsh friends that support same club team as me and they really want the Germans to win.

Every tournament where there’s a few of the home nations playing there’s a large percentage of English people that want the others to do well (hell, even the Republic of Ireland which I can NEVER understand?) but the rest always rally around their hate of England. Every time. Like it’s edgy to want England to lose of something.

I always want the home nations and Ireland to do well, except the feeling never seems to be reciprocated. The others hold a real spite against the English and sometimes its not only confined to sport either.

Because there's a lot of unpleasant history there.

I think Holland will win today Wijnaldum and Depay are playing well and the wing back Dumfries is looking good as well. I think Belgium will edge out Portugal in what could be a close game.

It is charming when anyone from a ‘Celtic’ nation hates on me when they hear my English accent, I cannot even be bothered to tell them I actually have more Celtic blood in me than anything else. I just let them rant over ancient history

A couple of things first - I totally get why English people would be confused as to why some Wales fans don’t support England (there’s more than you think who do support them, actually).

I actually want my English friends to be happy (including a good friend in this thread!). Hand on heart, I can’t say I want England to win it though. The main reason...well, imagine you were English, living in England and Wales won the World Cup (stay with me, here!) and all you ever heard about was their stunning victory....for the next fifty bloomin years. This, despite the fact you lived in a different country and considered us friendly sporting rivals.

I think many would find that extremely wearing, even annoying. That’s what we face!

We’re the little guys, proud, but often overlooked and often sneered at (I know Welsh people can take it too far, but English people can be just as vile. The vitriol towards Wales on social media is incredible). We want to stick one on the big guys next door, who (understandably) dominate in many ways, including the media.

I loved football focus as a kid. When the internationals were on, there’d be half an hour on what boots Glenn Hoddle wore and right at the end “the other home nations are also in action this weekend”. Every time (it’s better these days). It teaches you to feel different - I sensed I was different from back then.

In fact, what does “Wales” literally mean? It means “foreigner/stranger/other” - it’s hard-wired into us that we are not the norm.

I’d argue that the countries of the UK co-exist pretty well in normal times. Sport is one chance to express difference and frustrations with things - the oppression of the language, the difficult history that often saw Wales demeaned in legislation etc. It’s a story barely told in education, even in Wales.

GSTQ - that causes hackles to rise, as it smacks of British=English, when the original Britons were the Welsh. Get your own anthem and that falls away - hell, we’ll even join in!

We even find it hard when WWII is glorified in song and memory as an English achievement.

What I do know is that if the histories of England and Wales were magically swapped, there’d be a lot of angst towards us from English people when it comes to sport.

We’re the small guy - let us snap away annoyingly at your heels when it comes to sport. It’s largely forgotten after, except by nasty people....on BOTH sides.

Good luck England - I’ll be delighted for the lovely friends from a fantastic country I love to visit. Me - I’ll be hiding in a cave to escape the 30 years of mania we’ll be forced to be a part of

Surprised Nicola has not released a statement blaming Westminster
