What should they be and how are they worked out?

Say your gross weekly pay is £549.76 and your tax is £65.40 and your NI is £47.69 does that sound right?

Can’t I negotiate that they only take 6% if I say I’ll put out my own fires, fight my own wars, police my own neighbourhood, make my own nuclear weapons, reduce my own carbon footprint and do my own operations?

Most of the things you mentioned comes from PAYE and council tax. Council tax way worse than NI in terms of value for money. At least NI theoretically pays for your state pension.

Of course yeah. Shit. Buggered that up. I pay a separate pension as well though. I dunno. Just disheartening when you see an amount and then the take home is way way less.
