I’m 34 in a months time and both myself and John have decided we don’t want children. Because of this I looked into getting my tubes tied. I got rejected at the doctors saying that funding for the treatment was limited and I wouldn’t be eligible for the procedure. This led me to look privately, the price is high but happy to pay so I don’t have to keep using the pill/injection. My question is, have others gone private and what was your experience?

Not for sterilisation but my experience ofprivate health care is that you will get the same medical treatment as you do on the NHS but in nicer surroundings. Hope it goes well

I'm currently awaiting my appointment to see a specialist on the NHS, it takes a little fight to be sterilized but if you keep pushing you might get approved. I'm going to keep going until they accept me as I know my own mind and have never wanted children.

I have looked into private but it's expensive. I also don't think they provide the best care as it's a money making environment.

I’m happy to pay the cost, just unsure of the process I guess. Will they take one look at my age and go no, will I have to go through therapy (I’ve seen that some have had to talk to specialist to confirm they are healthy and still don’t want children). I’m worried that I’m about to start a battle where I’m already losing.

Speak to whoever is going to be providing your care. They will answer all your questions. No responsible doctor or surgeon will want to risk carrying out a procedure unless they're sure that it's right for you, even if it's only because they don't want a legal problem somewhere down the line.

I think the standard procedure is any women can be sterilized but doctor's prefer to perform the surgery for women over 30, so in that sense you should be approved. I think the counselling is the NHS procedure as they have a duty of care. Private you are paying for a service so you shouldn't have to participate in that.

I would contact your local private practice and ask for a consultation appointment. They will go through everything and answer all your questions.

I was sterilised at 33 6 years ago, so I would be persistent and try your GP again.

I tried again today and they just said they no longer do it due to funding. I got a quote of £4709 today. John is going to look down the male sterilisation route as we think it might be easier and more accessible.

I was sterilised when I had my last c-section done just over 3 years ago at the same time they done that operation.

The operation itself is very simple and they literally just remove a section of your tube (about an inch) either side and seal them off and that's it done.

The after effects of having it done are not always as great. So these you need to research as well if you decide to go ahead.

Also paying for a private clinic, 95% of the time you are still getting the same surgeon who works in a NHS hospital as well as a private clinic as a lot of specialist do go between NHS and private hospitals and clinics. So you are really paying for the use of the clinic rather than a specialist surgeon. Wait times now as well because of covid are not always shorter than waiting for a NHS service.

You can in some NHS hospitals pay for a private room on a ward anyway so you could potentially save yourself thousands by doing it that way if you can get approved on the NHS in the future as its a same day procedure so you don't usually stay in for long afterwards anyway.

The vasectomy may be approved easier than female sterilisation and depending on the doctors clinic you use a lot are now performming them at the doctors surgeries rather than in a hospital environment making them easier to get approved.

To be honest that might be a good idea anyway because it is a much simpler procedure for and man anyway is that something you are both happy with.

You will still need to go down the counselling route if it is a reputable private hospital I know this because I know someone going through this at the moment and is paying privately.
