Because........

When knickers, shorts, jeans etc were first made they were made in two parts like the cowboys chaps n belted together to make a pair...... Then they made em sewn together but the term a pair stuck

Goes back to Victorian days and those hugh crinoline bell skirts. Ladies couldn't use a toilet in them, and it was quite customary to walk onto the lawn and pee while standing - hence a pair of knickers were two separate legs with an open gap between.......

My friend is a scouser and i dont know if that makes any diffence but she always refers to her bra as bras and she also says pants for trousers which i think is odd.

my mum and my aunt always called them "a pair of bras" and my friend calls it "a trouser" so I suppose it depends where you're from

certainly trousers are paired because long ago your leg covering was called your 'trews' and you had one trew per leg. a couple of centuries later the fashion changed to tight fiting leggings called hoes. these were made from one piece of materiel. when the fashion changed to pantaloons and stockings the pants were made from 2 bits of cloth and so were similar enough to a pair of trews to get the plural.

as for bras being singular, i can only presume that despite having two tits to suport Otto only needed to make one titsling......

and if women were caught short at dinner a servent would bring a "potty" dor them to use at the dinner table, whereas men would go behind a screen in the corner of the room

Maybe its because one pant could easily be confused with a heavy sigh and a pair of bra’s might be mistaken for the opening lines of a beach boys song....
