I prefer the toasties from Costa. But I prefer the filtered coffee in Starbucks and the free refill… and the fruit toast lol

Of the two, Costa for various reasons - they're a British founded company, their loyalty scheme is better (and doesn't expect you to deposit money with them to get the interest to use it), their UK tax contributions aren't questionable.

I go in both chains because you can guarantee a large chain coffee shop is wheelchair accessible most of the time (excluding a few branches of Café Nero) whereas there are a lot of independent coffee places (and other hospitality venues) in Manchester that are not accessible. For example, Bundobust (Indian street food) states quite categorically on its website that it is NOT accessible and there is no disabled access. Lovely

I've never understood what's the appeal of these places. How people so much need thier daily coffee fix. I'm on holiday in Greece now, it's my fourth week and all I drink is milk, fruit juice or water.

I don't know what it is to be honest. I've wondered if it's the power of the large chains paying for adaptation to venues. The fact chains have outlets in modern malls as well as old buildings in, say, the Northern Quarter type places. Or that the publicity of Starbucks or Costa obstructing access would be damaging. My local high street is almost 100% not accessible. Local councillors keep trumpeting about supporting the high street but have no reply when you say "I can't get in the businesses". I just head to Manchester and find accessible places or use the supermarket over the butcher, baker and candlestick maker locally. I can't go on a train though (can't get down the steps onto the platform )

I prefer Pret, though there are none nearby, so that's always a draw when I'm travelling.

Cafe Nero's acoustics are dreadful - I don't care how good their coffee might be, I can't stand the noise!

I have a Costa once a week or so. The drive through is right next to McDs.

It always makes me smile that McDs have a huge banner facing exactly where you sit at the drive through, advertising their 99p coffee...

If stuck between the two with no alternative, definitely Costa - and then the more expensive option. Their standard coffee just tatses like mud to me (I only drink black Americanos). Much prefer Caffe Nero or an independent.

Depends. If I’m having the only coffee I like (coconut flat white with caramel) then it has to be costa. If I’m having a cuppa tea, then it’s Starbucks all day long.

I will, for accessible venues, but my local high street independent cafés all have steps to get inside and the seating areas upstairs. I use a wheelchair.

Of those two then Costa, but the coffee isn't upto much. Only ever get it in service stations. Of the big chains Cafe Nero has the best coffee, but like people have said use the independents. Rhode Island in Stockport is a small chain (others in Oldham and Alty I think) and the coffee is damn fine.

Independent ones are better. Always try to keep them in business but when your constantly on the move the chains have the advantage because you know you can get your coffee fix. That's how they get the money business people
