I want to brighten up my family grave.

It’s an oak frame with name plates around the edge.

I want to polish the plates and darken the engraved lettering. Is that possible before I polish the plates and if so is there a good product to use?

After polishing the plates, get some black nail polish and wipe into the engraved letters. Just a trace at the bottom of the engraved grooves, not a massive splot. When it's well dried, carefully clean and repolish any traces outside the lettering.

You might be able to find a polyurethane spray lacquer that you could use to seal the surface, I have done this successfully with a plaque that was mounted indoors, but I'm not sure how well it would stand up to outdoor conditions.

My preference is to use ultra fine 0000 grade wire wool instead of polish, I have used this on Brass,Copper,Stainless Steel, Chrome plating and even Gold plated items.
