" My osteopath had an interesting theory on yoga - it's more to do with how you're built whether you can do the positions fully or not. She said I had loose hips. It wasn't my back that went but my hips went out of alignment and wrenched my lower back muscles. Did karate at school and one of the warm-ups was the lotus position. First time I just did it with no effort and legs completely flat on the floor. | |||

Go very, very slowly, and if you have the slightest twinge, stop and rest, and try a different pose. You could probably find a beginner session online aimed especially at those with back issues. "Keep thinking I should do something, what’s the difference between yoga and Pilates, they look very similar " They are very similar, the main difference I think is that Pilates is about physical strength, alignment and mobility, whereas yoga is about all those things AND mental well-being, grounding, and affecting holistic positive change. Yoga can also have a spiritual element if you so choose. Yoga is an incredibly versatile practice with emphases ranging from HIIT and highly aerobic styles, to much gentler, more restful relaxation and meditative styles. I'm desperate to give acroyoga a go myself, though this seems highly unlikely to be possible anytime soon! | |||
