Just want to point this out, please add your own..

Long ball game, not spherical?

He can pick a pass, is that like a card game so he goes over to a deck of cards and picks out his pass?

Game of two halves, not football then?

He’s hit that with venom. I didn’t see any snakes on the field..

What didn't make sense to me was the Polish player who lay on the ground behind the wall while Spain took a free kick on the edge of the penalty area! All the terms in the OP made perfect sense!

"It's a game of two halves". Of course it's two halves, if it was three it'd be thirds.

"What didn't make sense to me was the Polish player who lay on the ground behind the wall while Spain took a free kick on the edge of the penalty area! All the terms in the OP made perfect sense!"

Because the free kick was so close, the free kick taker sometimes kicks the ball under the wall when the players jump as they anticipate the taker to kick it over them. The player lying down is just an extra blocker

I've been watching football since I was about 5 and played as a child and I have never, ever seen any player lie down on the floor!

Haha, that's brilliant, the Goalie must be wondering why he bothers organising the wall to the left or right in the first place

"I don’t know what a ‘set piece’ is but hear it all the time "

A thing where the ball is returned to open play after a stoppage, e.g. a free kick or corner.

I don’t know what ‘open play’ is, or understand anything about free kicks or corners, so we may be here a while

Open play = when the ball is being passed around on the pitch, within the white lines that make up the big rectangular playing area. If something happens like a foul or other reason for stopping the play, the ball has to be put back into open play. So a set piece is basically putting the ball back into a situation of being passed around after it has been stationary.

Ahem… Isn’t that something to do with player positioning just before something else happens?

A player is offside if they are closer to the goal line than the last defending player (not including goalkeeper) when inside their opponents half AND the player is interfering with play or their team gains an advantage. Having a hand or arm beyond the opponent does not count.

Well technically, if an attacking team passes the ball to another player who is deemed to be nearer the opposition goal than a defender when the pass is delivered, then the linesman/woman usually puts up their flag, but if another player isn't interfering with play, and the attacking team score, then the goal usually stands. However, now that we have GLT (Goal Line Technology) and such other nonsense, you will often see referees doing the shape of a TV screen in their hands to indicate that they need to decide whether the attacking player was only a whisker in front of the las defender

One of the biggest myths in football that.

At the time utd had the likes of schmeichel, Keane, cantona, ince etc so the idea they won trophies with a team of teenagers is nonsense l.
