To pick up on a point made earlier, I have heard of riggers being divided into two, those about process (how you tie) and those about product (the end result).

I divide riggers into three groups, those that like doing intricate patterns for the sake of the patterns. Those who like to bind people, and rope is their favourite method. Then those into Japanese connective style rope. Of course these groups can overlap.

The latter two groups use of rope can look good without being intricate.

The point of Japanese rope is not intricate patterns for the sake of it. It is about how you apply the rope and the removal of rope. In this way it is not boring for the rigger because they are applying rope with intention, and you avoid "bored rope bottom syndrome", because the tension, or speed of how the rope is applied keeps the rope bottom in the moment.

One of the reasons I am against learning from books and YouTube is that they are good for patterns, but most don't deal with: rope flow, moving the body, or connection in rope. I always point people in the direction of Esinem's video with the model Ilka Noir on ichinawa (tying with one rope) the rope tying is not complicated, it is all about connection.

I would add for completeness the following.

Japanese rope is not a single entity there are different schools of rope that tie differently.

Also rope tying evolves, so harnesses change their shape, or fall out of fashion.

Finally, I am in no way being prescriptive, there are a lot of ways to do rope, it is all about fun in what floats your boat and doing it safely.

Before lockdown if you are based in London I would have recomended:

Hitchin Bitches which is a female led monthly rope group, but they have lost their venue, but I am sure they will find another.

Peer Rope London, another monthly rope group but they have lost their venue but I am sure it will resurface.

Peer Rope Sutton which is a monthly rope group but has restructured but should be back.

Anatomie Studio is London's only permanent rope space it may currently be back in action in accordance with covid rules, but you can keep an eye for the general sessions once the world reopens.

Hopefully there will be a new rope space in Mitcham in the next 6 months.

Last but not least when the London Alternative Market is in full swing it has a rope room, but tends to be Top heavy (pun intended).

Most London based kink events usually have a dungeon and there is great, good, bad and indifferent rope to watch in them.

If you are on the site that can't be mentioned you can track these events.

One word of warning rope should always be thoughtful, but as hinted earlier you can have various types of rope from sensual rope to sadistic rope. The first time I saw sadistic rope I could not watch it as it was a particularly sadistic predicament tie. Now it is all part of the tool kit.

So not all rope is easy on the eye in action but it will all be non scary stuff at Anatomie and the peer ropes.

The health warning, if you are going to learn rope, please read the sections on safety and anatomy in the books and watch the videos on safety and anatomy that are online before you start.

YouTube is now awash with videos on Shibari. The best in my opinion are Giotto Rope, and Twisted Monk, but everyone has their favourites. Also Christian Red an excellent Rigger from Nottingham has a YouTube channel covering rope and kink. The Duchy has videos on it although some are behind a pay wall. Also Crash Restraint has a curriculum but some of the links to videos are broken.

If you are into pretty rope the Knotty Boys have two books on Amazon one is Showing You the Ropes. Not my style but others love them. A good halfway house are Midori's The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage (she also has a YouTube channel but on being a domme) or Shibari You Can Use by Lee Harrington.

If you are more Japanese focussed Shin Nawakari's The Essence of Shibari. If you want tie men Western Style (I will steal from anywhere), Tie Me Up by Stephen Niederwieser contains ties to be used on men. A simple Western Style book is Lord Morpheus Bondage Basics.

If you want to be old school Douglas Kent's Complete Shibari vol.1 but they are going for silly money.

If you are looking to be tied, the following are usually recommended The Guide to getting tied up by Evie Vane, and Clover's book The Rope Bottom Book.

If you are just in it for sex Chanta Rose's Bondage for Sex is good fun (she also has a shed load of Lesbian Domination films if that is your thing).

There are other books, everyone has their favourite.

As many know, we are partial to a bit of rope fun, and agree with the well worded response on styles and flow...

Seiko never seems to bore of my tying, she loves the focus and I tensity in my eyes...
