I would do buy I don't want to. I like to relate things to my personal experiences. I hope that you understand my point of view on this matter as it is important to me to know you understand where I am coming from.

I’m not talking about personal experiences, I’m talking about people who are so completely self absorbed that every topic some how comes back to them.

I quite like personal threads. I think we learn from each other and our shared experiences and they often turn into opportunities for everyone to pipe up and bring their own thoughts and experience into it.

It's ok to have diva moments or to take the limelight every now and then.

If Im not in the mood for listening to someone's personal thread.. I'll just go elsewhere.

It's all good.

Everyone’s different though. Some people find support and comfort in those type of threads. Like “I need a hug” “cheer me up” type thing.

I get where you’re coming from in a way but different folks different strokes.

I probably didn’t explain it very well, it’s more the self pitying aspect that irks me, if people are talking about themselves to include everyone and their experiences that’s fine, it’s when it’s only about themselves and we have to discuss them solely, I see it more and more recently.

If I have a problem or a situation and I want peoples opinions, is the thread really about myself and wanting to talk about myself or is it just me saying right this is what’s happened blah blah blah now over to the forum what would you do, what do you think, what’s your interpretation?

Yeah the original post is about myself but it’s other peoples opinions and views I’m looking for.

Are you running a thread about what irks you OP?

…..but to be serious for a moment, I understand what you mean but some of these people have no outlet, no one to turn to and the threads are their means to ‘talk’, be heard, be seen. That’s all. It isn’t necessarily a call for attention or sympathy. Just a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on.

What may seem irksome and perhaps trifling to many is an enormous help, or call for one, for them.

Are we talking about narcissism here OP? Or someone who is a bit self absorbed maybe?

I think plenty on here like talking about their own life experiences though, and found many a thread uplifting when everyone shares their experiences so you don't feel so alone in your struggles.

Everyone’s favourite subject is themselves and most people on here are trying to put themselves ‘out there’ to be seen, so want to talk about their thoughts and opinions.

I don’t see an issue with it, it’s just people making connections.

The forums would be a weird place if people didn’t express themselves from their own experiences or thoughts

It's a forum, it attracts many personality types for various reasons.

People will use it as they wish.

We're not all the same, some will focus mainly upon themselves, others will focus mainly upon others, and all those in between.

Some seek attention and validation by speaking of themselves, others do it in other ways.

Nah. Variety drives the forum. I like all threads - some are more interesting to me than others. But if an answer to post pops into my head on any thread then I'm happy.

Stay within forum rules. Skip those threads which don't interest you.

Why? Is it that forums could become a place of adult social, conversation and interaction about interesting subjects.

Not oh woe is me, who's hot and who's not god forbid, threads that aren't about attention.

I'm always amused by the threads started about narcissists and people detail how they have suffered but without even a hint of irony they then jump on other threads and tell their tale at every opportunity and they can relate to everything that others have gone through. Every bad experience pales in comparison to theirs.

Absolutely not. I enjoy reading those! This is what I don’t like about threads like these. I see no need for them and it makes people think “ I wonder if I do that” etc and therefore people are more reluctant to post x

To be fair CJ did clarify a bit more further down from his OP on what he means.

Did he. I tend to the read the title and maybe the last few comments when I comment. If he did then fair enough. Although I’m sure not everyone reads whole threads, I rarely do so I stick by what I said. "

Yeah not always helpful, I've done similar myself, found I need to add more to explain my op better.

Its another reason why we need an edit post feature to help avoid situations like this. But also why careful consideration at times is critical to making a post.

"I quite like personal threads.

"I would do buy I don't want to. I like to relate things to my personal experiences. I hope that you understand my point of view on this matter as it is important to me to know you understand where I am coming from.

I hope I have answered your question

I’m not talking about personal experiences, I’m talking about people who are so completely self absorbed that every topic some how comes back to them.

Aren't they all tho? I mean, even if we're asking people how they feel about something, what they want or anything else, it's because the OP wants to either spread some joy, gain knowledge or perspective, start a barny.

They all come back to the OP somehow.

I probably didn’t explain it very well, it’s more the self pitying aspect that irks me, if people are talking about themselves to include everyone and their experiences that’s fine, it’s when it’s only about themselves and we have to discuss them solely, I see it more and more recently.

I feel I should be apologising for my ‘transition’ threads now

An edit post feature would allow you to completely change the question once you have a set of answers though. Open to abuse.

"Are we talking about narcissism here OP? Or someone who is a bit self absorbed maybe?

I think plenty on here like talking about their own life experiences though, and found many a thread uplifting when everyone shares their experiences so you don't feel so alone in your struggles.

Everyone’s favourite subject is themselves and most people on here are trying to put themselves ‘out there’ to be seen, so want to talk about their thoughts and opinions.

I don’t see an issue with it, it’s just people making connections.

The forums would be a weird place if people didn’t express themselves from their own experiences or thoughts"

I hear what you are saying. But I do think there is a difference between those who only speak of themselves Vs those who speak of themselves and listen and converse about a subject, if that makes sense?

I don’t quite understand where this is supposed to be going but if I was asking for advice or an opinion on something I’d be more inclined to listen to someone that says yeah that’s happened to me, this was my experience of it, this was how I dealt with it etc.

So when someone posts a thread asking for advice or an opinion I’ll think if I’ve personally experienced what they are describing and talk about my experience of it and how I dealt with a situation and then apply it to them or see if they can do anything with what I’ve said.

If that makes me vile or narcissistic I don’t give a fuck.

Like when I wanted to know how to do the best roast potatoes and miss honey said she sprinkled plain flour on them I did it and it gave me perfect crispy roasts. Did I think she was narcissistic because she said well actually this is how I do my roast potatoes, no I didn’t I took her advice on how she deals with the situation and then applied it to my situation.

Is that not how Wes the supposed to learn? By taking advice from people who have already experienced whatever is being discussed and then applying it to ourselves?

Fucking hate these types of threads.

Don’t really see it as a problem.

The forums are full of all different threads.

Some are predictably tedious from the usual suspects.

Some are insightful about serious issues.

Some are just a bit of fun.

Get involved in the ones you enjoy, and avoid those you don’t.

Life is often not as complicated as we would think.

But I do get your point CJ and tend too avoid those type of threads most of the time.

I've seen this so many times with work colleagues so it doesn't surprise me in here.

They try to justify their comments or actions by using their Daily Affirmation approach and announcing I'm a cunt and this is who I am and you need to accept me as I am!

Bullying takes many forms and claiming you are a survivor because no-one has succeeded in beating you down just shows a lack of understanding of any opinion apart from your own and proves only that you have a belligerent personality.

It's a tricky one, sometimes I wonder if a conversation warrants just nodding at what the person is saying and asking questions, or if it enhances the conversation by linking it with a similair situation I may have had and talking about that too. If it's give and take from both parties then Im sure that makes for a good conversation, and excellent social skills rather than one dominating, but then think is it rude to not just comtemplate their experience with no input from me. Easier to talk to dogs or horses really when you think about it. Did I tell you about my dogs? .....
