"In theory it could be awesome, helping each other, offering support or just doing nice stuff that isn't even out your way, sharing cuttings from plants in your gardens etc. In practice... urgh, could very easily be open to bitching and snide stuff. We have a community FB group that puts up things like local job adverts and offers of extra food and stuff. It's monitored so works well" That's what the letter claims. But I'm skeptical. At the moment all my neighbours are nice people I wave and say hello to. Occasionally make generic small talk to. But what if it turns out I was better off not getting to know them or them me?

" Hang back a few weeks, then make a casual enquiry how it is going next time you chat with a neighbour.

"Assumed it is just an invite for nosey neighbours, one-upmanship, gossip and arguments. Some people already don't like my front hedge, my radio aerials or my non running VW camper so I'm assuming I won't fit the social climbing spec. And that's without all the women I have round, so it went in the bin!" That what I fear. Maybe I'm paranoid but I sometimes wonder if they gossip about me? (Which they probably don't). Imagine reading all the posts about number xxx who's always out naked in the garden or who still hasn't refreshed his flower beds.

"We're on next-door, it's ok, some useful/interesting posts - offers, want ads etc. Lots of moaning too though." Yes that's the app it wants me to join. I'm not interested in bitching and moaning.

It is the fear of not knowing what others might be saying about you which is its greatest recruiting tool and therefore hard to resist. Stick to having the existing good relationship with the neighbours you already know!

"Had a letter inviting me to join a neighbourhood app to keep in contact with my neighbours and community. Has anyone had any experience with similar neighbourhood social media apps? Has it been very useful or is it just an invite for nosey neighbours, one-upmanship, gossip and arguments?" An app? Who manages/ admins it? Where is the data kept and how secure is it? I'd be bloody amazed if the community knows any of the answers to the above. For those reasons alone I'd steer well bloody clear.

"I've been on a neighbourhood watch group and it was just notifying you of any break ins and disturbances in the park or joint clean ups or things like when the kids were trick or treating. There's usually admin that keep things in check. We were all just nice normal neighbours with the streets best intrest at heart so it worked well. If a groups full of paranoid folk and busy bodies then that's what you usually get on the chat. Put in what you want out of it R" . I challenged a few people complaining about delivery drivers and children etc. I was quickly shouted down.
