I want to go for a weekend away. Where shall I go? I need a place rich in history, art and some beautiful nature spot or two nearby. I want somewhere to recharge batteries. Suggest me an excellent staycation please for July/August within 3 hours train journey from London, please.

Off the list: London, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow. Thanks

I can't think of many places not to go! Instead of going with all the obvious so far, why not somewhere off the beaten track steeped in history? Google is your friend ... amazon look for guide books? How about throwing a dart at a map?

Winchester surely, rather than Southampton.

Capital of England’s first king, Alfred, Cathedral with the World’s longest nave, school where the term Manners Maketh Man was first coined, pretty countryside, some Michelin star restaurants (although there’s one that’s rather suspect)……and so one.

I think Southampton is a good center, as you can travel up to Winchester, to new forest all not very far from each other, Portsmouth for the navy stuff, Bournemouth! All about half hour/45 mins from central Southampton

What's there to do?

Quite a lot to be fair. It has a cathedral, a lovely town. A train ride to exmouth (beach). I used to live there x

You know one of my favourite light watch movies is about Guernsey Island which just reminded me I'd like to see that place. But it wasn't filmed there sadly.

"I'm not keeping up, but I'm very excited. And clearly there is a Yorkshire leader on board "

If you fancy York, it might be cheaper to stay outside the city and get a bus in.

There's enough history and beautiful scenery in and around York for many weekends away.

Go to Highlands. Or enjoy cocktails on George St in Edi. For a great pub feel Three Sisters.

Manchester (he/him)

Leeds, I’m surprised that no ones mentioned it!

It’s a lovely city, great bars, restaurants, galleries and loads of history to soak up.

Plus it’s a great place to travel to the dales or up to York for the day

I would also agree with Nottingham and Southwell.

Nottingham isn't touristy but has plenty to do, including caves, and Southwell has a fabulous cathedral in a cute market town.

I love ecclesiastical architecture

It's brilliant

My sister lives in York, so I know it reasonably well.

Winchester looks interesting but I haven't been. It's on my list.

Quite right. You don't want to spend half the time travelling.

York is apparently less than 2 and a half hours from Kings Cross, so that's not too bad.
