What comics did you read as a kiddie?

I was lucky in that I got 2 a week, my Mum paid for one and my Nan paid for one bless her soul.

The Beano was almost an ever present, then the 2nd one went through phases .. at one time Nutty, original home of Bananaman, then short flings with Buddy and Champ which were more action based boys type comics, and there was a comic called Hoot which was short lived - about a year I think.

And I also got some sneaky reads of my sisters Misty and when she was older her Jackie magazine (I learnt a lot about girls from Jackie!)

Which ones do you remember reading?

My life as a kid was comics.’

I can remember being excited about the first edition of The Shiver and Shake.

But most popular were

The Victor and Hotspur

Beans and Dandy

Warlord

Battle Action

and those little war comic books like The Commando

I only ever had the Dandy once a week, use to have it delivery with the newspaper. Think I still have them in a box up in the loft from way back in 1884.

Remember getting excited about the Summer Specials? Big A3 sized editions on shiny paper (that was unusual back in those days as the comics were usually printed on newspaper style paper).

I used to get one to read on the way to the annual Summer holiday at Butlins in Minehead or Porthtowan etc

I had the odd Topper in between but never a regular read .. about 2 years ago someone was selling an almost pristine complete years worth (1982 I think) on eBay, so I got them for about £20. Almost like new, been kept boxed away so no ageing or discolouring. A great bit of nostalgia!

Still have most of them in sealed boxes somewhere in the attic from about prog 400 onwards. Lost prog 1-399 when my mother decided to burn these "worthless comics" taking up space in my bedroom at the time.

Beano, Disney, Bunty (little picket sized thing) and whatever we could get our hands on in Germany. The American PX was a good source of something different, Spiderman, Batman Snoopy and remember some solider one as well. Asterix was a favourite and still pick them up occasionally now. My grandad also used to save up the comic strips from English newspapers, Andy Cap and alike and post them over every couple of months.

There was a lot more to comics than the kids get now.

- Conan the Barbarian

- G.I. Joe

- The Uncanny X-Men

- Todd McFarlane's Spiderman

- Spawn!

- Infinity Gauntlet series (I still own 3 pristine copies )

They were not girlie! Actually the main characters were boys and my favourite childhood books were often based around mini kids gangs getting up to lots of troubles and adventures

None. I was bought the Dandy once for a cub scout camp. Sadly my reading was so poor that I could read a simple kids comic (dyslexic). I tried to follow the plot through the images but it just felt a little immature to me. However I did enjoy the packet of sherbert double dab that came attached to the front. Obviously anything a bit more than the Dandy would have totally been unreadable. My inability to read put me off all literature as a kid. My favourite book growing up was the Readers Digest Road Map of the UK. I would spend hours planning routes and from a very young age I was the family navigator. No Sat navs back then and we travelled a lot.

Lots of Marvel stuff

British... Planet of the Apes Weekly, Captain Britain, Spider-Man, Complete Fantastic Four, Rampage, Hulk Weekly, Warrior (Non Marvel)

US...Uncanny X-Men, Daredevil, Iron Man, Invaders, Star Wars, Fantastic Four, Dr Strange, Marvel Premiere, Marvel Preview and a few others as well.

As an adult I can recommend a lot by Ed Brubaker (Criminal in particular), Brian K Vaughn (Y that man) and Bendis (Powers and Daredevil)
