Anyone fairly expert with birds? I had a dead greater spotted woodpecker in the garden today. Not near to food or water and had no signs of having been attacked.

I assumed possible heat stress, maybe it had flown and hit something. What would you think?

Heat stress and probably feeding young at this time too. Also could of flown into power line or a window. Poor little thing though, lovely birds!

If it’s been ringed there’ll be a way of reporting its demise online, can’t remember the details though.

Overhead cables of any kind, turbines large or small.

Could be any number of parasites or disease though honestly or even neighbouring cats?

Doesn’t really help I know!

Natural causes. I know that's no help really but they're not immortal.

I've seen quite a few dead wood pigeons this week but I think they've probably been clipped by traffic.

Spot on! They have to eat grit which help digests the seed/grain in their crop to aid digestion. Early mornings after the first feed is when they line the sides of the road and ‘grit’ while there’s little traffic. Hope this helps.
