OK so at the same time as maximum drama has been made about taking the knee to...(not entirely sure what to put here)... Increase awareness of racism? Is that right...

A Serbian who plays for Austria... Abuses an opponent who is Albanian... For being Albanian... The player has history of this.

Am fifa... With an opportunity to flex its muscles and show they mean business... And kick the player out of the tournament... Punish him by banning him for one paltry match.

There's no place for racism. If you're going to pretend to give the impression that it will not be tolerated fifa... Please show you won't tolerate it.

Story here...

I agree, I'm not sure or well informed enough about racism that goes on between the balkand nations, but if he had he said it about another race, there would be a much bigger uproar.

I'm surprised at how little attention it got to be honest. Almost as if people picked up on and then just forgot about it.

Is that really racism?

Not to defend the action, but that seems the wrong label. More antagonistic nationalism?

Let's face it, if that were a Scottish player and an English player, it would probably be referenced as an example of our old rivalry.

It's a good point... I don't know enough about it.... But... If said scotsman said...

"you English cu*t

Or Welsh cu*t

Or Indian cu*t

Or paki cu*t (deliberately using abbreviation).... Is that racist or antagonistic nationalism?

I was on a training exercise in Croatia a couple of years ago, when asked what the Croatian soldiers thought about Serbs the answer I got was "We fucking hate Serbs, if we find them we kill them, and Russians"

This is not racism as such, this is Balkan mentality, over a 1,000 years of blood feuds, this is similar to Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri did to the Serbs in the world cup who did the Albanian Eagle symbol as a goal celebration. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44586587

There is a possibility of racism. Serbs are, in the majority of cases, Christians (Orthodox) while around 60% of Albanians are Muslim.

It's described here as nationalism rather than racism: https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/marko-arnautovic-what-say-celebration-north-macedonia-austria-euro-2020-racist-apology-1052552

Islam Isn't a race it's a religion.

I know. Xenophobia then is perhaps a better description than racism? The fact is that Albanians are a different ethnic group to the Serbs, irrespective of religion.

I may be talking in ignorance here... But whether it be racism (and if I've used it inaccurately... Apologies) or nationalism or antagonism or religionism or any other ism... .. Its a great opportunity for fifa to show they won't tolerate the language of hate in their tournament isn't it?

The player in question was suspended for a week.

And there's the problem. Antagonistic nationalism is racism. It is the believe that one's heritage is greater than anothers. That the heritage of another is less than. Those sentiments if allowed to flourish are the start of genocide.

Mr

Agreed there is no place for any -ism in sport or society. Children look up to their sporting heroes and try to emulate them.

Having witnessed the Balkans first hand in Bosnia Herzegovina, Bosnia Republika Serpska and Kosovo in the 1990s, nothing with change anytime soon: It will take a great deal of time to heal.
