Okay, so if they’ve been detained in this climate, they must be pretty unwell. It’s an awful, inhumane process, done with the best intention, but rarely seen that way. Your friend will need friends. People often steer clear, because they’re embarrassed or don’t know what to say. Just being there is so important. If you don’t know what to say, then say that. They’ll probably be heavily medicated, so may not say much, but they’ll still know you’re there. Their home may need taking care of. They may need washing doing etc. Take them some food when they’re ready. Foods poor in most units, unless they’re in a priory. I’ve kept if brief, there’s loads more, but being there is the most important thing. (Even if they’re saying and doing upsetting things.) Hope this helps? Feel free to ask if you want anything else.

" Happy to help. They've not been sectioned (yet) came close to it, but I do support someone who is suffering anxiety and bi polar Self care is crucial. Make sure you have support too

" Like I say, mine hasn't been detained. After an episode a couple of weeks ago very nearly was.....they have to admit they are at break point, he cannot identify that point. But whether in a unit or not it is exhausting. They are a focus 24/7 People see you as consistent support and assume your OK. Nobody ever asks me how I am, but always ask after him....you can feel invisible and you can never tell people the truth, always the standard response

If so, you’re entitled to a carer’s assessment. If not, a local support group can be a good option. Presumably all online at the moment. Failing that, sing out if you need a chat.
