Can you take it?

A compliment.

When I was younger of someone complimented me I'd deflect it....turn it into a joke or similar.

Now a day's I take them on the manner they are given.

Can you take a compliment?

Have you always being comfortable in doing so?

I think I used to feel embarrassed by compliments, now I embrace them

I say "thank you". I might not always agree with them or believe they mean it, but I try to be gracious nonetheless. I used to deflect because it made me uncomfortable too, OP. I once heard somebody say that not accepting a compliment was a personal rejection of the giver. It made me think a bit.

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

It depends who is doing the complimenting. I've never been good at taking them, but honestly until fab it wasn't really an issue very often, and if I got a compliment I'd be embarrassed but at least I believed it was genuine.

These days I take everything with a bucket of salt and while compliments still make me blush it does take a lot to make me believe them.

I struggle. My best mate told me off once after her ladyship had complimented me saying she liked the way I smelt with a new aftershave she bought me. I thought this was nonsense, what she liked was the smell of the product which had become a bit of a joke between us "mmm that product you're wearing smells nice".

He told me that it was rude to deflect a compliment and sounded ungrateful so I try to be different now.

A compliment is just acknowledging that we appreciate something about someone/thing else.

Most of the time we don’t like compliments because we know where all our skeletons are buried and so we can feel that they are not genuine.

I’m not great at it. But I think it really does depend who it’s from. If it’s from a close mate who will tell me when I look shit as well then I can take the compliments.

Or there is someone in my life who keeps telling me I look exhausted but still beautiful and that actually means a lot

But I find it difficult from others

Yes, it can lift your day.

(But it can also make you feel a bit smug, and then you think “but did they really mean it, or are they being sarcastic…”)

It depends on the giver as to how you respond.

I feel very uncomfortable with most compliments. I like things to be objective and verifiable. That's rarely the case with a compliment.

If somebody gives me their opinion that I'm good at something or something they think is positive about me, I feel like accepting the compliment means I agree with them, and usually I don't. Luke

If it’s about my work or a new haircut then yes. Anything body related I just don’t understand.

I can take a compliment

A colleague at work complimented me a few weeks ago and I was like "I know right!" She laughed and said that she wished she could be more like me and accept compliments confidently.

People keep complimenting my hair atm, which has simply gone very (home dyed) wrong but apparently looks good. That's harder to take a compliment on.

It depends for me.

If someone is paying a compliment that plays into my perceptions of my strengths then I will take it (You're dead funny! Yes I am, thanks for noticing).

If it's something I don't perceive as a strength then I will immediately decide the person paying the compliment is full of shit and start getting sarcastic (You're gorgeous! Sure, why should I believe the evidence of my own eyes, every mirror and every photograph when I could listen to a horny bloke's sycophancy?).

I am excellent at paying compliments though, and like to do so frequently.
