Between "I'm sorry" and "I apologise"?

Say both at a funeral.

'I'm sorry for your loss'

'I apologise for your loss'

I apologise makes it sound like you were responsible for the death.

I'm sorry sounds more like you are saying you have sympathy for how someone is feeling.

I think the only difference for me is I’d use I apologise for work related things and I’m sorry in general life. Although I obviously rarely have the need to use either

I’m sorry for friends & family, I apologise in a professional capacity.

I can’t ever imagine saying ‘I apologise’ at a funeral
