Bye bye social media...

Last night after approximately 25 minutes of deliberation, I took the step and deleted my social media accounts. No more Facey B or Insta for me! Has anyone else grown tired of social media? The ar5eholes it attracts? The blatant racists who make themselves look even more like idiots by claiming they aren't racist? The armchair immigration experts (who have probably never even left the village they were born in)? Not to mention Shazza from around the corner who is more clued up about Covid than the world health organisation and all the qualified virologists put together. Has anyone else grown tired of the constant circle of bullsh1t, bullying and false information that social media seems to provide?

I'm still very new to these forums, but I've had far more interesting and meaningful conversations with people on here in the past week than Ive ever had with folk on social media.

I was late to the Insta trend as I'd always avoided it due to by intolerance of narcissists. However, as I only follow real life friends, local food and drink places and a couple of brands/well known people, I don't see the blatant flexing.

I have to use social media for work and the stench of gammon is strong and now we can add anti-vax cranks to it, also. So I removed myself from most Facebook groups and just don't get "involved".

Social media is a term that came along long after internet forums, so I can see why the OP might not consider it as such.

The term Social Media id from the Web 2.0 age - around 2006 onwards, with the emergence of specific platforms like facebook. I don’t actually think of forums/message boards as social media myself. Those platforms work in somewhat different ways.

I guess you could argue that forums been incorporated into term when it became a “thing though.

Sorry - thinking out loud, here :

Generally speaking I dislike social media. I have a Facebook account for business purposes but very rarely post on it. I've never used Twitter. I post comments on YouTube and that can be pretty toxic, and there is Fab too. The rest of it I'll happily leave. Luke

I think if it was annoying you, you did the right thing.

My Facebook account is locked down so tight that I only see posts from my very few friends on there and adverts for ridiculously expensive niche items. I did belong to local groups at one point but as soon as people started posting nasty things about others in the neighborhood I left them. I find it very handy for keeping in touch with friends and family who live in far flung countries though

You cannot have an opinion on social media.

Even if you speak out about crime someone will defend career criminals.

I have said for a long time now people are too dependant on social media and telling the world what they up to and being influenced by terrible people.

We listen to those who have a voice through it that are no good for society and their only interest is stiring up hate while developing a property portfolio and earning millions.

It's given a place to the very worst of mankind to act out their veil intimidating predatory behaviour against the weak.

We lived without it and so can you.

You do you

Social media is just as much of a life line to some people as it is the scum of the intent to others.

If you are bored or are unable to find ways to enjoy it or make use of it then good for you.

I use it to keep in touch with friends from all over the world.

I use it to stay updated with family that I'm unable to see as much of due to time, when I get some time I can sit and see what interesting things are going on in their lives.

Social media going away won't stop "Shazza" believing what she believes. With the world being connected you just see there are more people that believe certain things. If it wasn't social media, they would still get their conspiracy theories from somewhere.

Oh and as said above, this is social media also and it often can have the same amount of bullshit and drivel plastered all over the place, just like the other social media outlets.

Bottom line, it all comes down to how you can and want to use it.

Instagram also has some amazing photographic artwork. Stop looking at the surface level of these things, dig deep and you will find some truely beautiful and amazing pictures and artwork.

Same for YouTube, among the bullshit vlogs and influencer shite, there are some great informative and thought provoking videos.

As with every thing in life there is a balance to it all, you will find a little bit of the good and the bad.

I don't have a personal Facebook as I think it would cause nothing but eye rolls and drama and I can not be bothered. I have Instagram and I like it because it's simple and keeps me in touch with family and friends and I love photography. I make sure to only follow accounts that make me feel good and only accept people I know and like. I keep it simple and it works well for me.

I think social media is fantastic in ways, but I understand how it can be frustrating and quite damaging for some. I've been overwhelmed by it in the past and sometimes still fall down a bad hole when it comes to comparing myself to strangers.

It’s a fair point.

I just focused on the forum part, because that’s what he mentioned and it’s the only bit I knew he uses.

Thinking back to when I used to lecture, social media was seen as something a bit different to websites and their forums, so I suspect I be saying to students “there are, of course, websites that have features found on social media platforms”.

I’d have refrained from mentioning Fab as an example, hopefully .

Agree with Instagram. I use it for personal and work purposes. There's some truly amazing posts on there if you are willing to let yourself fall down the rabbit hole.

Facebook is an occasional thing for me, I've got a lot of old pictures on there and I use it to keep in touch with friends and family spread all over the place. It's nice to see pictures of the kids growing up that I don't get to see often etc but I don't post on there often.

All my personal social media is a locked down pretty damn tight. You can't find me unless I want you to so I don't tend to have issues with it.

Deleted Fakebook a couple of years ago - it’s was basically shite, inane “challenges” (tag in 5 friends..) then most of my timeline was full of shite that people I was friends with liked.

So Mary from work liked a pic of one of her friends dog, so for some inexplicable reason some totally randomers dog, who I don’t know and have zero interest in, would be all over my timeline.

Just binned it. Haven’t missed it at all.

All I have now is Twatter, for the football. But my muted / blocked accounts and word lists are huge as that was turning into a pile of shite too. And periodically this site, which is mostly shit too (hey, just saying as I see it! ) so I’ll be UNLOS again in a few weeks.

Never had Insta / WhatsApp or any of the other shite, full of self-centred narcissists and I can’t be arsed with it all

Anyway, having said all that, smile everyone and be happy!

Yeah, I guess fab is classed as social media, but I find it very different from mainstream social media. Whilst I agree that mainstream social media is great for some things. Keeping in touch with friends, selling unwanted stuff, reuniting lost pets with owners and seeing what your mate had for tea etc, I also see it as a pedestal for people that aren't very nice to cause upset towards others. I'm not into that sh1t, so I decided to get rid. And I'm bloody pleased I did.

But you don't have to see their shit. You don't have to expose yourself to their soap box wannabe podium.

The amount of shit that happens on FB that I have no idea about until somebody else says to me "did you see?" because I have the bullshit filtered out.

Thats what I don't get, it's like people are acting that you have to have all of FB or none of it. You can pretty much have it so you see exactly what you want.

Sometimes some bullshit filters through but it is rare.

As I say way up above, you do whatever you want to do with social media that suits you. Just that what you see as the bad does not need to stop you from enjoying the good.

somewhere, someplace

I probably check FB maybe a couple of times a week, mostly keep it for keeping in touch with family and updating them on my kids, insta I look at more for various different reasons, but on the whole use them a lot less than I used to x

It's much more fun on here anyway.
