Do you derail threads away from the OP? Is it bad etiquette to do so or is it just part of the wonder of the forums?

If you find yourself going off on a tangent, do you start a new thread?

No right or wrong answers, I’m just curious

That was my poor attempt at derailing. Anyway, I'm guilty of these sometimes when a thread inspires me somehow. So not a bad intention.

Paradise, Herts

I think I do it. But mainly if someone comments something then I comment in reply then they comment and I feel bad not replying! .

So yeah I think I’m guilty. I don’t think it matters too much though. Depends what kind of thread it is. Probably best not to have a conversation on the secret service or one of those fuck avoid threads as it would kinda spoil it.

Reading

At times its natural for threads to wander about a bit just like a conversation does. But often they are derailed by two people talking and flirting back and forth. Kinda annoying but then considering that's what the site is about is not surprising.

I just post what pops into my head or something I read might suggest another thread. If I derail it's not intentional (he says twirling his moustache and laughing) it just happens.

I don't think it matters if a thread gets derailed and sometimes the tangent can be of interest itself. I've seen some threads where there's about three different conversations happening.

I agree.

If it’s roughly on topic, then it’s expected and often a natural extension of the conversation. It’s very rare that a thread runs fully on point

There and to the left a bit

I actually think there can be a distinct difference between derailing a thread and one going off at a tangent from it's original intent.

Derailing generally suggests a deliberate attempt to take a thread away from the original intent, whereas going off at a tangent is normally just the natural meanderings of a conversation taking shape as points are thrown back and forth.

Now of course it depends on the type of thread too - it's very difficult to take a "snog, kiss avoid" type thread off at a tangent but the more debatey type threads I think it's only natural that it happens, and more often than not it's bought back to the OP at some point as a late comer posts in response to the OP without reading how the thread has flowed since.

Just throw comments in here and there - it all adds to the grand conversation.

Not intentionally derail, but some tangents can be suitable to remain in the main thread especially if I think the information could be useful to someone reading that thread at a later time.

I wouldn’t do it on purpose but yes I might end up adding something not quite relevant … flirting in amongst replies? … possibly guilty of that a little too It’s like oh fancy seeing you in here though isn’t it?

I’m a fan of the little side conversations, they’re often funny … but not if it’s a barny or a pissing contest - seen a few of them x
