They just don't care and while as individuals employees at all ranks and roles may support the causes. At the very top, the boardroom level, these causes are nothing but gimmicks to use as publicity stunts.

"Seeing more and more racism in sport but I think sport is just a way these racists piggyback on something to spread there hate" While I'm certainly not excusing it in anyway. As it is not an ecmxcuse but a reason that can be at least viewed as logical is that sport for people that enjoy it causes emotional reactions. Those reactions manifest in all kinds of frustrated release. Sometimes from a dark place. In the case of football more than any other sport, it is the world's most popular sport so the pool size to draw from the population will have a much larger number of racists than others.

"So on this site you have to register with a cc so if you posted a racist comment the site would know your real name and address to pass on to the police...so why can't twitter and insta and Facebook do something similar? because they are protected under US law" Do we want our discourse dictated by foreign standards?

"zuckerberg and co love it. it makes them billions. they have been responsible for many things which are going on in the world and seem completely protected by law. holocaust deniers, flat earthers, racist behaviour, covid scaremongering the list goes on. they have platforms which allow the nutters a voice and the trouble with that is people are easily lead and tricked so they believe information which can be harmful. facebook and others can afford to moderate everything so every post is delayed until it is checked. they have revenues larger than some countries. If they moderated or delayed posts you wouldnt get a mad gunman in new zealand killing people live on facebook in a church. facebook, google and twitter are a serious threat to the people. they have too much influence with the news and information they collect and sell about you. we all know trump was banned by twitter and facebook. but did you know ayatollah khomeini posted on them formats that all jews must die and he was not banned. facebook decides what you see and hear. not what is the truth. " They are not responsible though. Its the people that post these things that are responsible. Yes they could do more to remove some content quickly but people will still hold these views and will as they always have done find a way to spout it.

The sad lament of the over-privileged being asked to treat others with respect, equality and dignity. Long may they be made to feel slightly uncomfortable by the inconvenience of having to be “politically correct”.

I think the issue is what is installed into some people when they're younger and unfortunately it's hard to knock it out of them. ^^ I agree but as people get older and develop and understand their own mindset they could unlearn unhealthy teachings from family members. I live in hope that it will end one day or at least die down a lot. ^^I would love to see but I have learnt that won't happen because sometimes I don't think the media helps. On one hand it's good to know what goes on around the world but on the other hand if its just negative news that can be given to us do we need to constantly see and hear about it?? The system too doesn't help most of the time either and it's sad to see. No race is better than any other and we're all humans at the end of the day.^^ This is true and I wish more would act like that xx"

"It’s really very simple. Social media is funded by advertising, advertising is driven by user engagement. User engagement is really easy to measure. Racism and anything that creates an emotional response increases engagement for good and for bad. The platform makes money from the user engagement. Addicting users is how these platforms succeed, it doesn’t matter if it’s racism or social justice, it all creates profits." When the service is free. YOU are the product.

"Serious thread time....why can't these social media companies have more control on what is being said on there platforms....make people register to join...name,phone number and address...if you post a racist comment then you can be easily traced then you should be named and shamed as the scumbag you are....this includes anyone using social media to make derogatory remarks or online bullying...." That’s a slippery slope.

"They definitely need to do something about it, they could ban certain phrases etc so things can't be posted. They manage to stop you writing words here and I'm sure Facebook and Co could do the same. " Face book does something similar it flashes a warning saying this could b considered hate or something of that nature! But still let's u post as I banter with eldest daughter all time and call her a bitch ! X

They manage to stop you writing words here and I'm sure Facebook and Co could do the same. " People can work around word bans, and say offensive things in different ways. To me, it really should be possible (and easy), for authorities to go after people who transgress. Let people say what they want, but let them face the full consequences. It’s easy for these cowards to be brave when there are no consequences.

"They have named and shamed many people tracked down from the footage and people who posted online, all be it a small %." Agreed. It is possible to trace people and enforce, but clearly not enough resource for the deterrent to be meaningful. A task force and an accelerated prosecution process could create a meaningful deterrent, with people realising that they WILL face consequences for what they post. At the moment it seems to just be the occasional police intervention when a high profile footballer is abused . Not enough

Big companies don't give a shit about right or wrong, it is about what brings in the most cash. " He's right also big social media like twitter facebook and tiktok have realised controversial posts generates engagement and that's the thing they want most they want you clicking on the post to load another page with fresh adverts on it they want you sharing it so more people see and so on it is only when enought voice call out is issue do they do anything

Naming and shaming is not the correct solution as these people are just trying to get attention. I use many chat rooms and their solution is to mute people for a longer time after each infringement, eventually into a permanent ban. There are ways of preventing people signing up again for a different ID.

Naming and shaming smacks of vigilantism and will cause people to mete out their own "justice". Sure, prosecute people (the Malicious Communications Act is for exactly this), have them serve a sentence if they have broken the law, or better yet, participate in restorative justice, instead.

"It's not that they don't have control, it's the choice of the companies of what they allow on their platforms. Facebook for example, death and r*pe threats apparently "don't violate their community standards" when reported but the mere hint of a nipple showing through clothing or valid criticism of Trump I have regularly seen people get posts removed for and time outs. " Very true. Inconsistency is a huge problem

"I've e-mailed employers with screenshots of people's racist comments and some of it has been pretty shocking stuff from those in careers like care work where they're potentially looking after extremely vulnerable people. One was also a nurse. Her comments disappeared when I informed her that I'd sent her comments to where she worked. Say what you want in front of me but make sure nothing gives away details of your personal life on social media while doing it. No fucks given. " look it's the thought police

If someone is going online talking about how the NHS shouldn't help black people or immigrants and they wear a nurse's uniform, then it's a little bit worrying. I don't see someone holding that view doing the job to the best of their capabilities. Really hope this helps.

It’s important to remember that these companies make a lot of money from the information that we give them and from populating their market places. It’s in SM’s interests to keep us online, so feed us content that we want. It’s not there to provide balance or mitigate content, it’s there to keep us logged on, that leads to polarised content and echo chamber chats. It sounds extreme but that’s the business model that we welcome into our lives; us as the goods for sale

"There are some good points regarding censorship, motivation of the companies etc. but one thing I feel is often overlooked is just the sheer size of the issue. I admit I haven’t validated these figures but in 2019 30,000 hours of video were uploaded to Youtube every hour. In 2020 500 million tweets were sent each day. How do people think this issue could be handled better than it is now with community reporting? It’s also not just the big tech firms making money. When I was in school Social Media influencer or youtube personality were not available career paths. Spending hours playing video games got you labeled as a nerd and not a youtube millionaire and no one was offering to pay me thousands for a few holiday snaps! At what point and how do we hold these companies/people accountable aside from voting with our feet and hitting their bottom line?" I suspect/fear it comes down to the US government. Section 230 reform.
