She was clearly made up by him to fool you all in to undestimating him!

Did he teach you nothing after all those years and cases? You really think any woman would have stuck around with all the mental gymnastics that dude was pulling all the time?

Not in his TV series, but there was a spin off called Mrs Colombo where she was a reporter solving crimes with her daughter.

In that she was called Kate.

My bf was in the Columbo fan club and he said there was 69 episodes made and she didn’t make an appearance once.

However there was a spin off series called Mrs Columbo and he didn’t appear in that either.

I seem to remember she was in one episode where he was in black tie albeit she didn't appear on screen.

Personally, I liked the way he attributed any kind of cultural appreciation to his wife: "Oh no, sir, I don't know nothin' about that. My wife on the other hand. Oh she's a big fan, sir. Big fan."

I only saw a few episodes the other year (found on a slightly dodgy streaming site). It didn't grab me.

She never did. I believe originally there was a discussion between the writers that maybe she and all the relatives he often mentions didn't exist, but in a couple of episodes she features off camera, such as in Columbo Goes to College, where in order to expose the villains he uses his wife's car, and Rest in Peace, Mrs Columbo, where he arranges her fake funeral.

I did once see an episode of a short-lived spinoff series called Mrs Columbo with Susan Saint James. What were they thinking?

Very much. It was a well written character trait, to lull the villain into assuming he (columbo) was an uneducated and cultural nitwit. Then.... Gotcha

The old rope-a-dope trick worked every time. Peter Falk did a fantastic job of making it compelling. Aided by the superb writing as you say.

Just a correction: it was Kate Melgrew not Susan Saint James, who was in McMillan and Wife of course. Mrs C was given a first name in it - Kate. Apologies all...
