That is so true but so many of these great people will have been bullied at school because of it and they overcame the odds

It’s positive feel able to explain to the forums about this, OP.

I think that’s probably the best way on here - I’ve seem many great threads on autism, mental well-being etc. A lot of people will have similar experience and “get-it”.

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but do you, being absolutely honest, think that your Aspergers/autism/mental health impacts on the way you communicate with others?

If that is too personal, please don’t wordy about amswering.

As someone diagnosed about 2 years ago it does affect communication, but how much varies between individuals.

And it does cause depression! I think it's the stress of living in a world of people wired slightly differently!

Yes, I used to work with young people with autism/aspergers, so I’ve seen how communication can often present some challenges.

I had a feeling you had op (not the big nose!) just from the way you interacted sometimes on the forums and the way some people responded to you made me hope you didn’t take it to heart.

I think a lot of people need to bare these things in mind when responding to people xx

As for the nose. I’ve seen much bigger! It’s fine

Agree Nora - that’s what I was getting at in my post OP - I’d seen some of the recent posts.

That’s not a criticism of you, OP - the conventions and nuances of conversation can be a minefield, particularly online.

I think honesty about your situation may be a good thing. People should be understanding then, and if they are not, then they’re perhaps not the best people to be around.

I thought so too, You just never know do you.

I often wonder though in the future when everything and everyone is measured, categorised and labelled, what will be left ? are any of us normal , I’m certainly not and wouldn’t want to be. And what about people that are total dicks to other people, will a label excuse that behaviour , Will we say , oh he’s on the bit of a cunt scale, it’s not his fault. Not you OP btw, I think your funny and enjoy your posts, I find them entertaining

you make a great point mental problems have been with us forever back in the old days it was not labelled as such people were told to man stop whinging people were probablly tougher then , now we are mollycoddled to a degree but it is still great that people are getting help but you must never use it as a exscuse for being rude x

I've got Asperger's, too. Although I didn't know until I was 25, so I went to a mainstream school.

I think the lack of support has made me harder and more capable, but also caused other problems that continue to plague me into my adult life.

I can relate to some of this - social anxiety, reclusive, mood swings (have experienced major clinical depression and manic highs). I find having a routine helps (and it takes me time to switch to a new routine). I think I do have autism spectrum traits but am finding my own way of coping and accepting them.

Your not alone, I’m autistic myself and often it’s my intelligence that causes my depression. It doesn’t help that neurodivergent people see the world very differently and often we can view things in a way that causes our mental health to slip. I suffer with bad depression, I’ve got anxiety, I’m still prone to meltdowns or shutting down if things get too much but the first step is always finding somebody you can talk to about it and help you out

Aspergers wasn’t a thing when I was a kid. So I was just classed as being “socially awkward”.

Or the parents of another autistic person...

To all of you just to say you are great the way you are. Who said “mass production” was the ideal? Also we need different points of view and different ways of seeing the world to make changes and evolve.

If we were all exactly the same the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I can answer that I went to a autistic unit (school) with another person same age same condition

His mum babies him and he has trouble communicating being around people and cannot hold a conversation

I was taught I was not different and I can do anything anyone else can and I am the total opposite to him

Hope you have your answer

I also have 3 boys 2 are possibly autistic (well I know they are as I can spot it) and I treat them the same as I was “ your no different. In some areas you may struggle but some you will excel better than others

Like some people have a gay-dar, I have an Aspergers-dar (doesn't trip off the tongue so well).

I'm not autistic myself but am incredibly close to someone who is and was diagnosed as an adult. Nose regular sized though

I think we gravitate to each other!

I am realising that the few good friends I have all show autistic traits even if they don't have a diagnosis!
