Need advice about potiential new job

Right bit of background. I've been a qualified dispenser in a pharmacy now for 6 years. I have a full time position ATM but its an hours drive and no chance of more training and company not doing brilliant.

So while I'm off ATM I thought I'd have a look to see what else is out there.

Well I had an interview on Tuesday and all went well. But there are a few issues.

One is he is only ever going to allow me to work max 32 hours a week. Which I could live with.

Biggest issue is pay. I'm paid £7/hour ATM. This new pharmacy is offering £6.15! I'm not happy especially as minimum wage goes up higher than that in October. oh and by the way he said £7 would be what he pays someone who has worked for him 1-2 years

I'm to go in nxt tues and work a few hours to see how I get along with the team as they narrowed it down to me and someone else.

So how do I express fact I feel I should be offered more an hour without offending. I feel like saying I could make more working at McDonald's lol.

If it were me, I would politely explain your current earnings, and that you can't take a pay cut.

I would also be bold and ask him how many others with your experience would work for that wage.

If he offers at lower amount don't be afraid to negotiate.

If you knew the rate of pay would not be good enough why would you apply? Or did i miss something?

Did the advertised job description mention pay .?

If it did I can't see you having much joy,,.. if it didn't or said negotiable I'd be looking to do that..

They might think saving a few pence per hour is worth it,.. in my book experience and skills are valuable commodities..

well he would still have to pay the minimum wage when it goes up if it's more - also think how much money you will be saving if you have to drive an hour each way every work day

The problem is at the moment it is an employers market. People are that desperate for a job that they will work for a lot less then they would have done 5 years ago.

You don't need another job. Negotiate, see if you can get a higher wage. My local Boots was offering £7 for a trainee dispenser, so it might be worth investigating what the standard rate of pay is for someone with your qualifications.

can i ask a silly question if its over an hours drive to get to work wouldn't the value of not having to pay petrol help balance it out?

Thanks. Yeah I went to interview blind really as I hadn't seen the advert for job I just sent my cv to surrounding pharmacies and they happened to be hiring. So I had no idea the hours or pay.

Their attitude was I'll be saving petrol but can't believe I would save £7 a day in fuel as the drive is still about half what I do ATM.

No I won't be pushed around as my job is very stressful and my years of experience and training should get me more an hour than some newbie off street.

Yeah it will help some but this new pharmacy is still about half distance away. Do will help some but not sure I'll save £7 a day in petrol

Stick with what you have and find somewhere better not worse.

Don't undersell yourself. You know what you're worth, so stick to your guns. If he wants you badly enough he'll pay what you'd like.

We were discussing the same thing in regards to the value of skills to employers these day. Employers want people to work harder for less pay.

I would never advise a move for money, job satisfaction is key. The concern is you spoke of the uncertainty with your current employer maybe the thought of having a 100% of some income as opposed to 100% of no income outweighs things in the long run. Hard one.

See I never saw an advert I just happened to send them my cv just on off chance they might need someone so I went to interview not knowing hours or pay. Not an issue as I was off work anyway and thought good chance to brush up on interview skills.

I'm assuming he was thinking of taking on a new unqualified person and training them then I came along.

so effectively you are losing 85p/hr .. or (gross) £27.20 per week for a 32 hour week.

at the moment you are driving an hour to work ... so how much is that costing you in petrol/parking etc and compare that with what you may save on a more local job

you may find that you are essentially earning less but taking home more...

that said, the best time to haggle wages is before you start, so there's definitely no harm in trying to haggle the offer upwards, selling your existing knowledge experience - which is always a valuable asset

If it doesn't work out you are in no worse a position that you were before you started.

IMHO, money is not everything.

If one can manage financially with the pay cut, and if the job is less stressful, with more opportunities for learning and/or promotion at a later date, then personally I would take the job.

With less working hours, it means there will be more time for life outside work. To some, that alone is worth the switch.

Everyone's priorities are different, therefore, what suits one person may not suit another.

I think you should point out the time and money saved by not having to closely supervise as you have previous experience. If you want the job then hold out a bit and see where he goes with the negotiation. If you don't want it particularly much then go for a rate above what you would be comfortable with and let him 'win' by negotiating down if he really wants you.

I sit on both sides of this dilemma in my work like and at the end of the day if you are a good fit and able to offer something more than the marginal costs you are talking about then I would take the person in which I have to most confidence.

I can fully understand your point regarding pay but it's an employers market at the moment. It was on the news yesterday that employers are paying out less and less per hour with more and more workers pay dropping close to the minimum wage level. Pay is no longer a bargaining tool in the jobs market as their is always someone who will work for a few pence less. I work for three employers, basically doing the same job for all three, the pay varies from the minimum wage with one company up to £15 per hour with another.... Hope you find a way round it, but it sounds like you might be better staying put...xx

Very true. That's what Benz has been saying to me. Job satisfaction is totally worth more than money. I'm stressed and miserable where I am now.

It's scary to walk away from full time to do part time but if I like what I see tuesday and they like me then I just may make that decision. Will be tough to make but sometimes happiness more important to money.

Thanks everyone for your great input. I really appreciate all the good advice.

Benz and I are lucky cause I could take a pay cut and we could survive. I would love time outside work. ATM I leave house at 7:30 and don't get home till 19:00. That makes for long day and very little quality time at home.

Perhaps we need to sit down over weekend and do a few calculations and see where we could tighten our belt and make me going part time work.

I have a job ATM so I won't jump unless this turns out to be perfect fit but the atmosphere at interview was great and least I get chance to work a few hours with them and see what I think sort of a try before I buy

May be worth a few supermarkets websites too.

NHS - hospitals are often short of dispensers.

Reed, Totaljobs and Monster - general recruitment sites, but do have a lot of healthcare related jobs

And finally google.... for recruitment site who specialise in healthcare related role.

you need to wait till the decision on who they wish to employ, if its you then say you would like the job but the salary is less than you are comfortable with. He may back out but its a choice for him as it is a choice for you to accept what is in offer.

The simple fact is... qualified dispensers are always in demand somewhere or another and thus there is a going rate offered by the bigger employers..... most of which would pay more than £6.15 for someone who wasn't qualified.

It may also be a useful breathing point/stepping stone. If you can work in a better environment and get a qualification at the same time then it will broaden your horizons when you make your next move.

Psychological well-being can be far more valuable than fiscal reward.

It seems like you are ready to take a work break and this may give you the best of both worlds; a shorter commute, fewer hours, Potentially a better work atmosphere and an opportunity to advance your qualifications.

When you have worked out if you can afford it then these should go onto the pro side of your pros and cons list.

Don't regard it as a permanent move, but as a step along the path to where you want to be.

Thanks everyone for your great advice and wisdom.

Yeah I am at a cross roads of sorts. I had major surgery 9 weeks ago after having a year from hell with my health. I sort of had to stay where I was as I knew I needed surgery and this is first chance I have of moving pharmacies. I was treated very badly where I am now so much do by the supervisor I actually got transferred. I can't face going back even though it's a different branch and they nicer to me.

Bit of update. I got letter through from another pharmacy about same distance saying they are in need of a dispenser but ATM it would only be temporary contract with possibility of extending it and possibly permenant in future.

They are asking me to go in and have a chat and figure why not lol. I can then at least see what another pharmacy would offer hourly so on Tuesday I can honestly talk to other pharmacy about wage and have a figure to back it up with. I did apply for a position in a pharmacy just today that are offering £6.75 so if this other shop offering similar I can at least use it as a bargaining chip.

Brilliant news about the other offer...

Sounds like you have a few possibilities to think of. I work few hours but what I gain in 'time' is much more precious than money to me.
