That’s all you had to do? Lucky sod.

To get the princely sum of £1 per week I had to vacuum and dust or polish every day after school (my mum had major ocd and worked full time) and dry the pots every night.

I also had a paper round which paid around £3 to £4 per week.

If we’d had mines where I lived - I’d probably have been sent down those too!

I didn't get pocket money. We got treats on a sat night and money when the van came and money to get in the swimming. If you didn't come back with the 5p for the locker you got a skelped arse. I did work from when I was 12 so got my own money then

I received an "allowance". I think it was something like £2 a week back in 1980.

Thankfully, no expectation to engage in child labour. On the flip side, I was never allowed to beg or hassle my parents for things. I was told "You have an allowance. Save up for it, if you want it."

i ,the male, didnt get pocket money, however i was paid for chores, cutting the grass etc, it taught me the value of money, and i thing it has done me well in life, if you grow up expecting people to give you money, then thats a bad thing in my opinion, however if my dad saw that i had made an effort to save he would help, i remember i wanted a ghetto blaster, any one remember them?, and he saw that i had saved up about 3/4 of the money,i hadnt bought any sweets or comics for about 4 months, then he paid the rest for me

I didn't get pocket money, but I still had to do chores. I worked in the village shop a few days after school from the age of 13 until I went to college.

know exactly what you mean. Did exactly the same except the pub on the corner had an off sales window and took them there. Think Newcastle brown bottles were a premium I can remember.

No passed at 17 2 attempts on theory first time and only 8 driving lessons on practical I was just obsessed with cars as a kid think I wanted to be just like my dad used to follow him round everywhere and he would be fixing a car so to keep me occupied he would give me something like a knackered lawn mower and I would take that to bits in the workshop at same time

Sounds great! I remember my dad bought me an old workbench so I could saw wood when we was fixing stuff. Made all kinds of crap that in my young head we're alien blasters or rocket packs

I didn't realise untill a few years ago quite how lucky I was my mum and dad didn't have a lot of money but they were amazing and gave me the best upbringing I was very fortunate.

I remember my old neighbour gave me 10p just for picking up an empty cereal box from her garden and putting it in the bin.

Then when I went home my mum made me share my 10p with my brother and sister

I rarely had pocket money, I was always in trouble

Nothing too bad, just boundary pushing and there likes

I did though get a job on a market stall.

No pocket money from my parents but, until leaving Sixth Form:

Paper round x 2 on Sunday mornings.

'Spot the Ball' entry deliveries Sunday afternoon.

Car washing (x3 not my parent's) on a Saturday afternoon.

Standard grant only at College so I worked as a kitchen hand in the refectory (free food), volunteered for drug trials and worked as a receptionist in the Nurse's accommodation (general security, sorting post & letting the nurses into their rooms when they had locked themselves out). It was quiet environment so I was able to read and study for my course: I was paying tax and earning more than the newly qualified House Officers.

I think these jobs taught me a lot about time, hard work and money.

General things like vac, washing up, take trash out etc.

I remember saving up to get a sticky dart gun, took me a couple of weeks to save up for it and then it broke within a few hours

I was a dedicated hard worker who pulled more than my weight. Home care wasn't solely the preserve of adults, quite rightly.

Few answers here.

Used to take the "pop" bottles back to the off sales at the pub (remember them !!). Probbaly got a couple of old pence back

But when at school went without dinner - enough said - my school dinners turning into genarally lots of black vinyl with lovely large pictures & photo's around them - quite often of men with long hair & leather's.

Finally, my dad pursuaded me to read books. 50 p for each I finished. The bu**er never paid up, so since about 13 or 14, I've only read one book I think - the first Discworld - (except those needed for school)

Still have all the vinyl in various cupboards !!
