I'm a comic geek/nerd, I get the sense that the series is a big departure from its source material, I ain't always a purist, but I've avoided it.

there are too many to list.. although one of my favourites came in the new episodes with Dr Lynda and their house guest ( trying not to spoil anything) but when she keeps poking the house guest

Totally agree with this, Buffy TVS did "Once more with feeling" which was a musical masterpiece that was hilarious and moved the plot forward in that season, and everyone tried to do it after that and was never as good.
