Cable car catastrophe in Italy

For several years I have been awaiting the type of disaster that has happened today in Italy; the breakage of the main cable in a cable car system.

There are hundreds of cable cars throughout Europe, that are running on steel cables in harsh environments, many of which I suspect are not inspected or replaced sufficiently frequently.

Whilst I may be jumping the gun by stating that the main cable snapped, I have always personally avoided cable cars when on holiday, because I simply do not trust them.

One can barely imagine the horrific death those unfortunate people suffered.

I have no problem using lifts in buildings because the cables are not exposed to the external environment, that could cause corrison, whilst cable (cars) are being oxidised from the instant they are installed, particularly in coastal areas where the air is laden with salt droplets.

I've always thought they were dangerous, hence why I've only ever been on two in my 51 years

Funicular railways scare the shit outta me too

Probably being a bit overcautious here folks,

Admittedly I've not checked the stats but I'm pretty sure it's likely to be more dangerous crossing the road or driving to work....

It is horrifying. I have been on numerous cable cars. I hate heights and cable cars always made me nervous.

Your point about lifts is a bit incomplete. Even if a lift cable breaks, the lifts are designed not to fall anyway. They have components that stick into holes on the guide rails so it stops almost immediately. They have been like that since they were invented. There has never been a lift accident caused by a cable breakthat has led to any casualties.

The last fatalities due to cable car collapse in Italy were caused by a US Airforce fighter plane flying too low and breaking the cable if I'm not mistaken.

Yup what a whitewash that was.

I know there has been a tragedy with people loosing their lives, but whenever someone mentions cable cars I can’t help but automatically getting an image of a scene from a James Bond movie.

13 lives lost and obviously a tradegdy to all and families and feel for anyone who has lost.

There is a risk with any mode of travel and accidents will happen.

Sadly, the death toll is now 14

There were initially 2 survivors, both children. The only remaining is a 5 year old. I wouldn't want to be the one telling them what happened... poor child.
