Been called Fatty for 65 years but now will be renamed Freddy and drawn thinner so what do you think is it PC gone mad or the right thing to do for body conscious fat kids who might be bullied

I think the Beano jumped the shark when Dennis stopped getting the slipper for being nawty

On a serious issue too many kids are fat because of the crap they are given to eat.

Instead of renaming or drawing differently, why not just portray the character in a way that makes it cool.

Show how fatties can be winners in life.

Maybe this would help to remove some of the stigma.

Just my own musings, others may think differently.

Because then they'll be promoting obesity and anyone who thinks they're a legend in their own lunchtime will tell you that's the fucking worst thing to promote in society. I mean..... Successful, happy fat people!

I remember reading a series of books by Enid Blyton with a guy called Fatty in them. Will the band Thin Lizzy be getting renamed too?.

Is thin lizzy used to degrade many people? In fact as a fat person I've been called 'slim' in an attempt at a 'humerous' nickname.

.

Why does it have to be ‘promoting’ fat people.

It just shows fat people are of the same value in society as anybody else.

Your comments show you think having fat people in society is wrong, how can that be right. And there is a world of difference between fat and obese. Most people at some time in their life will probably be a bit fat, don’t mean they are obese.

On a mooch

I’m surprised it took this long. They had already renamed Pug to Plug, so was going to happen.

If the youth of today still read this they will associate themselves with one or more of the characters at some point, so why not a normal name. No one should have a name that is associated with their body’s characteristics and as teenagers they go through enough changes to be all of these at point in time, it’s normal.

No you've misunderstood what she said. She means society thinks fat people are bad.

Society evolves.... things change

We we wear seat belts now, less peoole smoke, we dont burn people at the stake etc

I think its a good thing - it helps prevent bullying and name calling

It sounds like an appropriate change to me. People shouldn't be bullied. The old name seems to glorify bullying so a change is welcome.

So many people who haven't read the Beano since they were 12 acting like it makes a difference to them what they call any of the Bash Street Kids.

Totally agree, times change and modern media can reflect that.

As a huge former Beano fan I've thought about this a lot.

The comics were made for a different era that just doesn't exist any more.

Dennis the Asbo?

Minnie the "Sassy"?

Any of the characters in the comic would have made appaling adults!

Sorry.... I thought the made the sarcasm obvious. A lot of times someone tries to just exist as a fat person. Be happy, show their success etc people accuse them of promoting obesity. It's ridiculous.

I'm wondering if you have ever looked at my profile though...... (sarcasm again just in case.... )
