Do people make their vows to God or to themselves and each other?

What's the point in promising to something you don't believe in? (God)

depends on which God you are referring to I guess?

we share together, it's not deceitful... every couple work out their boundaries for themselves, nobody's right to judge.

"

"

I did think it was a choice based on communication between the couple, who knew it was a requirement eh?!

OP, there will be some folks in relationships that aren't exactly healthy, and one part will apply pressure to share, making the other person feel as though they have to, to keep their partner (some peeps are master manipulators) but ultimately no... nobody HAS to do anything.

So, just for completeness, if you're a Christian then the commandments are rewritten by Jesus to:

1) Honour the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind

2) Love your neighbour as yourself

Therefore, if I share my wife I'm actually following half of the above commandments. So it's heaven for me!

In answer to the original post. We, Like all those who had a traditional marriage, perhaps even in a church of all places, made vows to each other. We didn’t make them TO God. Just in his presence allegedly, although I don’t recall seeing him in the crowd and he definitely isn’t in any photos!

We said traditional vows, so in context, perhaps we are breaking one. BUT we are both in agreement with this change in our views. Neither is lying, cheating or doing so involuntarily . We are still joined as one in matrimony.

Getting divorced Breaks the whole “till death do is part” bit where usually only one person wants it and it causes immense psychological pain to many.

(Not digging at those who are divorced for any reason and not wanting to cause a riot. Just making a point). But is the OP suggesting then that those in abusive relationships should grin and bare it just because many years ago they said they would be with that person until death.

There are a lot of couples that aren't here to experience things together.
