When I was 8 our teacher read out that silly nursery rhyme about being on what day meant. All others were born on Sunday etc etc and were meant to be bright and sunny etc

I was Wednesday’s child and supposedly full of woe.

The bitch asked who was born on that day and I put my arm up. “That’s correct then” she said spitefully. I can’t say I felt an unhappy child. Had a great mum and dad and friends.

Stayed with me that comment the cow.

That’s awful. A really terrible thing to say to a child, and the fact that you remember it still, it shows how much it hurt.

I think she was a bit thick tbh. I could never put a child down. Of course other teachers then said cruel things too which nowadays they couldn’t say and get away with.

Comments that where said to me when I was a child have stayed with me too.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the Home Counties in a single parent family.

I was brown, chubby, frizzy haired and in second hand clothes.

As I learnt with huge cost as a mix race kid with a disability being deaf from meningitis people, children and adults arevicious.

The wording was changed many years ago to

Wednesday’s child knows little woe

Maybe she should have kept herself up to date!

Try and think of the new wording it is very much more accurate. Sending hugs!

When i passed the exam for grammar school, a former teacher said it was 'very undeserved' that hurt until my mom came back with ' maybe it took a good teacher to get the best out of him'

There were some awful teachers in the 70’s and 80’s. I can remember the swimming teacher taking a dislike to me because i had longer hair and has no confidence in the water. One day because i had the temerity to brush wet hair from my eyes, she went off on one screaming and threw a flowery swimming hat at me to put on. I stayed away from pools for years.

I think it's hard blaming a single person in a different time ... yes, it's really not a nice thing to say or have said to you but if looked at more pragmatically. it happened and nothing can be done about, what are now regarded as horrible things were said to almost all children and back then were considered normal. I have found in my life to shrug my shoulders, dust myself off from most things, except they happened, except the past differences and try to never say likewise to others!

Keep smiling OP, hopefully not full of woe and definitely hope you've proved her wrong!

Most probably yes though I’ve hard life’s knocks.

In those days I think teachers churned out compliant robots.

Having worked in Education it always amazed me the high proportion of teachers that loathed kids and were horrible to them.

They were often the teachers that had problems with student behaviour and loathed back.

Some of them only worked as teachers because of the long holidays.

I know what a hard job it is but I am a strong believer that you should try to work at something you enjoy and are passionate about.
