What have you watched recently and would happily recommend?

On the back of favourite movie thread.

The last two I have seen would be: History of Make Up in Britain - 1920s episode. The time of women's liberation. Voting, chopping off hair, shortening skirts and smoking in public! The vamps and the flappers. Loved it.

And Avicii- his own autobiography in a way. His bumpy road to fame and pain of not being understood by those who surrounded him so close yet they didn't see when he started slipping away. The constant pushing, the medical problems and we get to see all the painful cracking...

Currently started Blitz Spirit by Lucy Worsley.

There is an excellent couple on Sky Documentaries at the moment that have seemingly been around for a few years that I have finally jumped on

Hitsville: Story of Motown

Beatles: Eight Days a Week

There is also a reaaaally good one about Studio 54 in New York which I thought was great.

“Bent coppers crossing the line of duty” it’s been on over the last few weeks on bbc really interesting.

A few months ago I watched “museums in quarantine” which I recommend if you like art

On that note The English Game on Netflix might catch your eye. Based on true story.

Good to watch if you’re into art and artists.

My absolute favourite was Everday Street which is a documentary showing the lives and work of New York street photographers. Loved it.

Last one I watched was Stonehenge: The Lost Circle Revealed. And then hiked to find see the quarry and where the circle used to be. Only have to go to Stonehenge to finish the story

Most of the documentaries i enjoy are about either music or physics, although I did find that history of makeup 1920s episode interesting (I didn't see any of the others)

Music

Sgt Pepper's Musical Revolution by Howard Goodall. He takes apart the tracks from Sgt Pepper and explains why they were so groundbreaking. Will watch any time in is on

The Art of Drumming by Steve White. I've always wanted to play the drums and this shows the mind blowing skills the best drummers have.

On Bass - Tina Weymouth (the 'on drums' and 'on guitar' episodes are also good).

Physics

Helen Czerski - From Ice to Fire

Jim Al-khalili - Precision The Measurement of all Things

Hannah Fry - Magic Numbers

My all-time favourite documentary film is Man on Wire, about Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The film chronicles the whole daredevil adventure wonderfully, from the seed of a dream, to the audacious planning, right through to him pulling it all off. The culmination, when he actually steps out onto the wire is one of the most awe-inspiring things I've ever seen.

One's I've watched recently on TV are the Barbara Hepworth one (as mentioned already on the thread). That was good. I watched one on Sky Documentaries called I Am Alfred Hitchcock last week which I'd recommend. I remember Bob Geldof did one on W B Yeats which I really enjoyed. There was a three parter on Beethoven on the BBC last year that was well done. Mark Gatiss did a couple a while back. One on Aubrey Beardsley and one on John Minton. I enjoyed both of those. There was an interesting one called The Vow, which was on Sky Documentaries a few months ago. That was pretty terrifying, about what was basically a cult and the guy who ran it. I think they're making a second series of that. I remember seeing one called Finding Vivian Maier a few years back which I liked. Ken Burns has done some great ones over the years. I'd highly recommend the ones he did on the US Civil War, Vietnam and country music. I know he's recently done one on Hemingway which I'm looking forward to catching at some point. As someone else mentioned further up the thread. The Helen Czerski one From Ice and Fire was good. I remember she also did one of colours which was really interesting. I remember Bettany Hughes did a couple of series on the great thinkers of history a while back on Socrates, Confucius, Buddha, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud and Frederick Nietzsche. They were great, though to be fair if the whole series had just been Bettany pushing a trolley round Tesco I'd have watched it.

The social dilemma

Also enjoyed Alien World, an imaginary view of how things could survive in different atmospheres / worlds, adapt & evolve, although not a true documentary in that sense.

Difficult question because it's kind of my job. They were all on bbc4, so I would say they are accessible if you are interested

They say you are only a good teacher if you can explain your subject in laid man terms

There's another excellent Motown doc called Standing in the Shadows of Motown, all about the brilliant musicians who played on so many classic hits with no credit.
