do you ever wonder if animals ever get bored of eating the same thing?

we have a great range of foods available to us (ok, a lot of them are animals so perhaps not great for the herbivores ) but a lot of animals stick to one thing.

also - hay - why do animals like eating hay? it is just dry grass!! and grass doesnt seem that exciting either.

why do you think we evolved such diverse tastes in food?

why am i posting this and not doing my assignment?????????

I think that they're only limited because they don't have wallets and are usually locked in a house/field or stables.

Otherwise I'm sure they'd be in the supermarket/pet shop or even restaurants trying out new food

Some little tummies are not made to eat a varied diet. A lot of "human food" is poisonous to a variety. Plus animals sense of taste is totally different to our own. And hay is sweet, so it's like being able to indulge in a huge box of Belgium chocolates without the calories (well, my horses seem to think so, anyway!)

As for my bearded Dragon.... I'd cry if I was made to eat his diet....although it seems to go down well with some of the "I'm a celebrity" contestants!

Chams or Socials

Our dog is full of allergies (including grass & pollen!!) she can only eat turkey, veg & potaoes. She lives off 3 different dry feeds with her meds wrapped in bits of turkey. I feel awful telling people she can’t have their treats

I can’t imagine a giraffe wondering what a lion tastes like.

well I've tried my dog with different things over the years but she's always preferred her pedigree chum sachets (won't eat the tin food) and loves her bakers meaty chunks .

My dog is on BARF diet. His meals are varied. He has beef heart, chicken, tripe, lamb, chicken portions.

I give him vegetables, rice or pasta mixed in wit his meals he loves banana and will loves raw carrot. I also give trachea and raw marrow bones for treats along with duck necks.

Pets diets don't have to be limited

My dog is raw fed, so he gets a variety of different meats/fruit/veg and rice. He also has a lump of raw chicken for breakfast, and natural treats.

I also say no if people want to give him treats, they don’t have to live with the farts when he eats something with grains or the like…

But with horses, they don’t cope well with diet changes.

Both my cats and my dog eat grass at times - often to enable them to be sick afterwards. My cats like the same thing mostly to eat but my dog is very fussy and likes variety and gets bored with roast chicken all the time. She just refuses to eat if she doesn’t fancy it.

For humans I think it often comes down to your motivation to eat. Some just eat because they are hungry and most foods will fill their needs. However others like variety and get sensory pleasure from eating through sense of smell, taste, texture and feeling full.

We are getting a puppy soon and I always wondered if a raw diet meant 'meals cooked from fresh' or literally raw. You just answered that, although I guess it's either or?

It’s literally raw. The evening meals are frozen raw nuggets that I buy from the pet shop, it’s really easy. You can make your own, but I didn’t have the confidence in feeding a complete diet for him.

I just get the frozen nuggets out in the morning and they defrost during the day.

Look into BARF (bones and raw feeding) it is literally raw fed diet. Not nice to handle but healthy

Many vets will tell you not to feed raw but that is bullshit. Vets are usually paid by companies such as Iams to promote their foods

Allaboutdogfood is a good website to learn about nutritional information in foods

I do give kibble, a good quality kibble usually has 80% of meals. I give my boy Eden or Millies Wolfheart.

Raw is definitely researching and usually works our cheaper. I spend avoid £40 a month an BARF, that is for a 56k German Shepherd who is fed twice a day

Animals don’t think like us. Food is fuel and survival for them. Some animals eat more than only one type of food, depending their needs on diet. They would eat fruits, berries, nuts whatever they found on their path.

For example chicken or other birds eat grit for their shell...

It's down to evolution. If there was a plentiful food source an animal evolved to eat it. Some became herbivores (eat all kinds of plants - not just hay), some carnivores (eats all kinds of meat - not just 5 or 5), some specialized in just one source (usually died out). We became omnivores, dogs the same too but went a bit further... they eat anything, sheep poo, mouldy sausages, even golf balls.

As to you. You are a distractmevore, eats up any kind of information that prevents a thesisit event occurring.

Mine seem happy with their little hard dry chunks! But I often put a bit of gravy or leftovers if suitable to make it more appealing x

I tried my dog on RAW when I got her - for a short while she liked raw off cuts of steak but not anything else. Now she won't eat RAW especially the frozen packs you can buy. She only likes cooked food.
