Cats in my garden

Has anyone found an effective method of excluding or deterring cats from your gardens.

My neighbour's two cats insist on coming into my gardens to defecate; their excrement can result in a condition called toxocariasis, which can be very dangerous.

My front garden is their favourite dumping ground; there are lots of urban myths about deterring cats such as clear bottles of water, but what really works.

I may eventually have to cover the loose soil with mesh.

It is horrific to find so much cat poo I my raised beds. Thanks.

I’m a cat person and yes they are life’s ultimate bunch of chancers. Not knowing if you get plenty of birds in your garden or they have taken a shine to your garden as a place to do there business. The option you said seemed a good idea. Good luck.

Our neighbours cats came into our garden and attacked and injured our dog (who looks mean but is soft as shit). Birds have disappeared too since she got them.

We have found that throwing buckets of water over them if you catch them can help

Cats used to go in my garage to poo and pee, the stink is awful.

I was told put raw onion on a plate by the garage door.

It actually worked.....haven’t a clue why but it’s stopped them going in.

Get yourself the Pestbye ultrasonic cat repeller or something similar. As long as it's motion triggered and ultrasonic, it will work.

You can pick them up for between 20 and 40 quid and it not only stops the problem immediately, but cats remember you have it and don't come back even when it's run out of batteries and you've forgotten all about it.

The neighbours cat craps in our garden. My lass told me to get the shovel and throw it over the fence. But it’s made no difference, now the cat still craps in our garden and the shovel is in the neighbours garden

Apparently Cats hate orange peel, banana skins and water.

Stand in your garden 24/7 with a handful of orange peel and a hose pipe. When you see a cat - throw the orange peel, if that's doesn't work use the hose pipe....

pesky cats get use to that so I would advise placing banana skins on likely escape roots... they will soon get fed up of slipping on them as they bolt for the exit.

If that doesn't work... try standing outside with 2 old metal bin lids and banging then together every night. The cats probably don't care but your neighbours will get really pissed off and will probably move house. Hey presto... cat problem gone.

OK cat poo in your garden may not be pleasant but do you know if any of these cats have a roundworm infection? Most cat owners are very responsible and worm their cats regularly. It's also incredibly rare for it to be something a human will catch from contaminated soil, unless you are mud wrestling.

Just use something like lion poo or another non cruel deterrent and chill about the roundworm. Also dig up all the existing poo as they have obviously chosen your garden as their litter tray.

Chicken wire and netting for raised beds, water hose/squirt bottle. The onion trick sounds interesting and I could see that working - my cat hates the smell of cut onion. I have a cat and others still come into the garden, as he’s not territorial.

You can use upturned sticks in the beds so that it makes it difficult for them to find a place to lower their bum without getting poked... if that makes sense?! I've also heard good things about citrus and coffee, as other posters have suggested.

Cats are put off wandering into an area if it already has the strong scent of other cats.

I strongly Suggest that you defecate at various strategic entry locations around your garden to mark your territory, and then wear a massive fur coat and sit in the middle of your lawn, licking your own arse and looking at everybody with utter contempt.

Note: Screws cellotaped to the fingertips work well as pretend claws and drinking straws glued to your cheeks will make convincing whiskers. Only use white ones though, a cat won’t be convinced that you’re actually a cat if you have multi coloured whiskers - they aren’t idiots.

It’s difficult with a cat to know where they’ve been. They aren’t on a lead, and they are active at night. They do bury it usually unlike dogs.

There are plenty of dog owners who don’t clear up behind their pets. I often pick up dog faeces that isn’t from my own dog when on a walk.

Whilst wildlife is a protected species I'd choose my birds over any cats as cats are just a nuisance and would do anything to keep them from shitting in my garden given cat poo is dangerous and so am I when tackling this situation I shouldn't have to build or making it costly which is unnecessary money spent that I shouldn't need to nor should anyone else I think a good zap could be beneficial

Take the same moral outlook to the rat in my garden thread....or is one animal deemed to on a higher plain as humans have domesticated it...

Intresting fact for all the cat lovers out there, the domesticated cat, is the only animal that will kill for reward and not necessity

So I have a cat. It used to piss and shit all over my lawn and possibly my neighbours too. I had dead spots all over my lawn, so I feel your pain.

I tried all kind of ‘deterrents’ and none work. The only thing I’ve found that works is putting in an outside litter box. I’ve dug out a couple of ft square about 6 inch deep a layer of stone and topped off with soft sand. I’ve tucked it away in a corner and screened it off so it can’t be seen.

I know it’s not your cat so you probably think you can’t be arsed with that but it’s the only thing that’s worked for me. Obviously it needs cleaning out regularly but it’s worth it to have clear grass.

I had both of my cats spayed a neutered. Feral cats make up a lot of shelter animals.

Dogs on the other hand, people pay hundreds of pounds for them then some people reose they don't stay puppies forever and so just dump them when they no longer fit their lifestyle only to get another a few years down the line.

Onions draw out smell, I put half cut ones around the house if we have glossed...so they may still be peeing, you just can't smell it anymore

(I don't know if onions really do keep cats away )

Hmm Never been as close to witness this but you'll be bringing gloves won't you plus mouse poo is difficult to identify unlike CAt poo still happily live near a mouse

We use 2 PestBye water jets, one for the garden and one for the drive and they work a treat. They cost about 25 pounds each. No harm to the cats but they activate a squirt of water when they cross the sensor and after a day or so learn to avoid the area.

Birds don't set them off so double bonus, lots of birds visiting and no cats to kill them.

The Amazon delivery man has learnt to run fast though!

I think your suggesting scatter these bottles, around the garden and make it look like a tip most cats don't care just look turn their heads or try to knock whatever is obstructive to them and carry on

No suggestions from me but my neighbours recently moved out taking their cats with them. The cats were constantly trying to get inside my house because they weren't let in their owners house very often. Now they're gone not only can I leave my back door open when I'm in the back garden without fear of finding a cat on the bed when I return, but there's so many birds in the garden now. It's really made me think about the impact too many cats can have on nature in the urban environment!

Yup. I work in an environment where a lot of similar people now live.

The programme 'don't fuck with cats' covers this as well.

Take the same moral outlook to the rat in my garden thread....or is one animal deemed to on a higher plain as humans have domesticated it...

Intresting fact for all the cat lovers out there, the domesticated cat, is the only animal that will kill for reward and not necessity "

Befriend one and give it a couple of cat biscuits + water. Not too much that it wants to stay though. It should keep the others away and not mess in the garden. Cats usually don't defecate near a food/water source). It's worked for me.

I was told put raw onion on a plate by the garage door.

It actually worked.....haven’t a clue why but it’s stopped them going in.

Onions draw out smell, I put half cut ones around the house if we have glossed...so they may still be peeing, you just can't smell it anymore

(I don't know if onions really do keep cats away )"

Just make sure you find them all once you have put them down.

We were evacuated from work once because of a gas smell, turned out to be a rotten onions!

I had 2 cats in my flat that were allowed out. I live in my dad's granny annex and he likes to feed the birds. We had lots of birds in our garden.

We don't have cats but seem to have adopted ones, three of them, they turn up ( not all at the same time ) have a snooze and go off again. We also have lots of birds who turn up every day for their dinner. They are no bother

The owners seem to know where they hang out as we had one of them knock to see if it was here because she hadn't seen it for two days ( it was ) They are no bother at all...so OP, you maybe need to move here, we get classy cats
