Any kind of appreciation of a person's own attributes is seen as boasting.

Liking/ being proud of your own figure, height, muscles, cock size, achievements, anything, is seen as a bad thing. It makes the people who don't have similar attributes feel bad about themselves so they have to put the person down so they feel better.

No issues with Mensa, I do qualify but not a member. Reason being that IQ is only one form of intelligence and the person who suggested I sign up (a work colleague) would have failed in the other ways. If it was used as a body to drive improvements in education or things like that I may well join

Intelligence is attractive to many people. However boasting is not attractive to most people - whether its boasting about intelligence, wealth, cars etc etc.

Perhaps this highlights the difference between 'measured' intelligence eg IQ and emotional intelligence.

My mum was a Mensa member and I could answer a lot of their test questions when I was 10. As an adult, I just can’t be bothered with the faff of an IQ test. What’s the point? I know I’m reasonably intelligent, and I also have many other skills besides answering test questions, so I’m perfectly happy as I am. Knowing my IQ won’t get me paid more or anything.

They also suit certain types of intelligence more then others. A lot are very maths based.

My husband was a member of mensa as a youngster.

He has said that if you do them regularly you get better at them too. I believe he got all the questions correct on one in his teens and that messed up their system

I've had some unpleasant experience with people from MENSA, it probably just was bad luck but the only Mensans I ever interacted with so far were dicks, and not the same kind you'd find here, so sorry I can't help! Hahaha!

I couldn't say that a high IQ has ever been an advantage in emotional and sexual matters. Difficult to get over the teenage years of overthinking everything, being a nerd and geek with no confidence to ever approach girls, and being totally unable to understand my own gender identity...

Often, it isn’t about elitism. It’s simply that likeminded people tend to be drawn to each other and wish to speak of issues that interests them in the comfort of knowing that that shan’t be judged by others as being elitist or boastful.

That would be my understanding of such groups, clubs or organisations.

As someone has already alluded to above, it would be deemed inappropriate here to exchange IQ scores whereas in a MENSA gathering, I should imagine it would be par for the course in a conversation as being a point of curiosity rather than boastfulness.

No. It’s based on how quickly you understand a problem and find a solution to it, hence mostly problem solving questions. That ought not be culturally biased as any child can look at puzzles like fitting a square object through a same sized square hole. Generally speaking.

It isn’t about skills, which can learnt and perfected through experience. That could be culturally biased.

I think everyone is smart in one way or another. I can't do my times tables at my age, used to bother me a lot. But I have a PhD and an expert in my area of expertise.

My grandad had no qualifications but he had amazing knowledge of how nature worked. He learnt from his environment and used it in his daily life.

I was told by an eminent Prof, pieces of paper and grades don't make you intelligent. It just says you have the ability to learn and think. They are meaningless unless you carry on learning and evolving and implement your knowledge.

I think everyone is smart in one way or another. I can't do my times tables at my age, used to bother me a lot. But I have a PhD and an expert in my area of expertise.

My grandad had no qualifications but he had amazing knowledge of how nature worked. He learnt from his environment and used it in his daily life.

Experience mostly, but I think in combination with high expectations. If someone has a first or a masters at a young age they tend to have not developed social skills or practical work/people experience and it winds people up especially if they don’t understand the politics and people issues in the workplace. It’s unfair mostly, they often just had a passion for a subject but they can be very hard work in teams of more experienced people. It often winds people up that they were able to pursue 5-6 years of post compulsory education without having to work, but that’s just jealousy normally.

MENSA just takes all that to an extra level of ridiculousness, unless you are doing something with your potential it’s wasted, why celebrate it for its own sake ? solve some big real world problems instead of silly puzzles

It isn’t about skills, which can learnt and perfected through experience. That could be culturally biased.

Certain people think maths and science is "White Culture". Maybe that is what they are on about

I see what you mean.

Our numbering system came from Arabic and Indian mathematical development.

The reason maths is used as a tool for measuring it is due to its very clear problem solving formula. It isn’t terribly complicated maths. It’s a maths of understanding what the problem is and how to solve it. It isn’t based on the formulae we learn in class. Problem solving maths isn’t necessarily culturally biased.

If it is, it would seem the Asians and Orientals are thrashing us at it then.
