I had a friend once who ghosted me for 3 years.

When I saw him in the street, he tried to say he had lung cancer and withdrew himself from everyone whilst he recovered.

His mum confirmed my suspicion, it was a lie.

Never spoke to him again.

My nan’s spare room.

A guy I worked with claimed on a jolly boys outing there was a guy on the bus who fell asleep wearing glasses so they cut his ear off and he was that pissed he didn’t notice and couldn’t work out why his glasses didn’t feel right.

He genuinely thought we would believe him.

My sister told my niece and nephew that our dad is dead.

She disowned him when he moved out the family home. He tried to maintain a relationship with her but she closed the door on him.

Me and her don't speak but I wasn't gonna stop my son from seeing his cousin. She had already said to me as far as she was concerned dad was dead a few years previous, whatever ya twat, knock yerself out, but it was when my son called me and told me about a really awkward convo he had with his cousin that I realised just how insidious she really is.

My son and nephew had been talking about their plans for the rest of the weekend and my son mentioned going to see grandad. My nephew asked who? All puzzled. So my son told him, our mums dad, my mum and your mum have the same dad, our grandad.

My nephew looked at my lad like he was a loon and said "no, he has been dead before I was born"

Breaks my heart man and sickens me that I'm related to her.

He's never abused us, he's always been a really decent guy. His actions didn't match her wants and she didn't like his new wife. She's a brat.

The only issue I've ever had with my dad was that he didn't leave sooner and have a chance at happiness years earlier coz it left me with guilt that he sacrificed for me.

To be honest it surprises me quite how often the old cancer lie is thrown around. Seems completely alien and abhorrent to me. Yet my exes ex husband did the exact same thing. By means of just one more way to try and control both her and their children.

Sickening and so disrespectful for anyone that has in fact really had to deal with and battle it themselves for real.

I've never mentioned this to anyone but Mr N before.

My mother used to say she had a brain tumour, not to the wider world just us kids and my dad. One time she had us all up in the bedroom where she lay in the dark giving us gifts like some final goodbye. She's 87 this month and as yet had received no confirmed diagnosis of this ailment. She now has multiple genuine health problems but still persists with the 'alternative ' ones.

It's a kind of standing, grim joke between my brother and I.

Then there's 'no, I'm not married love'. His wife had different ideas about that. She phoned me up. I was just 18. They'd just had a baby. She didn't blame me, as apparently he'd done it before. The pain in her voice and guilt for being so niaive however, will stay with me forever.

"An ex best friend told me she had cancer and only six months to live. That was eight years ago. She's healthier than I am. My mum had died from breast cancer so it was a particularly cruel lie.

*

Then there's 'no, I'm not married love'. His wife had different ideas about that. She phoned me up. I was just 18. They'd just had a baby. She didn't blame me, as apparently he'd done it before. The pain in her voice and guilt for being so niaive however, will stay with me forever.

To be fair to your friend I do know a couple of people who have been given the big C death sentence and at the last minute go into remission ... not excusing any lie but it can happen "

My friend didn't have cancer at all. She made it up. Total lie.

Oh! And there was the woman who told people someone assaulted her, which was completely false, closer to being the other way round...and then played dumb when she was confronted...

Just lucky there were a bunch of people present to witness that no such event took place!

It's pathetic how some people spread such shitty, shitty lies around.

I lie to myself in an effort to dissuade myself from doing stupid things. I have a female friend with whom I close to addicted. I have told her about my feeling and that anything physical would destroy our friendship. I desperately want to feel her beside me naked.

I regularly stop her from answering questions on the subject so as not to prove or disprove the lie I tell myself.

That he was an ex para who had been honourably discharged after injuries in bombing incidents in Afghanistan. He told such detailed stories about his time in the military and I had no reason to disbelieve him. Not having any friends or family in the forces meant I didn't pick up on any discrepancies for a couple of years. I even wrote a CV for him to get a job at my Mum's place of work which included details of his years in the Paras.

Eventually I twigged, but not until after he'd moved up to Yorkshire with me and my children. It turns out the intricately detailed stories were memorised from military biographies. He was obsessed with the military and knew ridiculous amounts of information about the history, weapons, wars etc. but had been rejected when he applied as a youngster.

The really tragic thing is that he's a really lovely, caring, funny guy. He had no need to invent such a backstory to get attention. I was furious that he risked my children's happinesss an stability by moving in with us knowing that one day it would come out. Once the anger subsided I mostly felt sad that he felt so unimpressive that he went to those extremes.

Agreed, bit it shows how people can create facades and personas to dupe other people.

Granted there's some shock around here today at the revelations but presumably that's because the individuals are annoyed with themselves at being taken in for so long.

Makes me slightly more sympathetic towards people who fall for elaborate scams, or find themselves in abusive or toxic relationships

That’s an interesting perspective, you don’t think that the people directly involved in their lives have a right to know what’s going on? "

Spoken like a true sjw. Do what you "feel" is right, consequences or fallout be damned. You have the notion of being virtuous on your side so you can't go wrong.

Thinking I was a person. It’s a kind of beautiful lie but seriously disorienting.

Recently found out someone I know has lied for the past 3 years.

It hurt and now I'll have to live with the regret that I didn't sort it sooner.

People hurt you intentionally sometimes and I don't understand why

However offended or affronted a person has been what gives someone else the right to be a self imposed judge, jury and executioner?

That'd be the same sort of person who'd want their nearest and dearest to always have the benefit of the doubt, the chance to defend themselves and a fair chance to sort out their own issues.

I think the biggest lie in my life is that there's one correct way to be and to make sense of myself. That I need to contort myself rather than flourish.

The widow man I presume?

He shall rename nameless but yeah, fucked up, truth always outs

Yea I've heard some absolute bs in my time. That was right up there with them...

I'm more shocked at how casually people can go around throwing grenades and blowing things up.

I suppose it's easy if you don't have to pick up the pieces afterwards.....

My point is that there’s a line between discretion and enabling manipulating behaviour.

I don’t agree with consequences be damned but I also don’t agree with enabling problematic behaviours. It’s a moral minefield and not as simple as being made out here

Regardless of it being a moral minefield, wrong is wrong by anybodies moral compass...

Lies, deceit, manipulation and devious behaviour are all a personal call based in dishonesty to garner either sympathy, attention, ill gotten gains etc. that being said ppl use these things for a multitude of reasons.

A lot of people are saying "I love you" ... don't you think at the time the person that said it meant it? Just grew out of it or changed? Actually really curious to know, I've been single for decades lol

It’s probably a mixture of both some people lie just to get what they want and others genuinely just fall out of love ..

I think the words 'I love you' are used so frequently now that people are very casual about it. I regularly hear people use it instead of 'good bye'. I do agree too that quite often people mean they love you at the moment they say it.

Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you will go to to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money!

Yes religion has to be the biggest humdinger in history.

All the perverts and criminals hide behind it - and people let them get away with it in the name if whatever man in the sky they believe in

Worst lie...I'm not in love with you because of everything that you have, but because of the way that you make me feel...lying bitch, would she feel the same way if I was on the dole, lived in a hovel, and looked like Quasemodo, I don't think so!
