Do you see stockings as....

Sexytime lingerie only?

I just saw an interesting comment on the brit award thread and was surprised, so wanted to open a discussion about it.

It was said that dua lipa should not have been wearing stockings when kids were watching.

Now this surpised me because I wear stockings not just for sexual reasons, but for day to day lingerie too.

My children have seen me put on a corset, girdle and stockings underneath my 50s swing dresses and petticoats.

When they first questioned what they were....as children are curious little beings....I told them the stockings make it easier for me to go to the toilet in my frilly dresses, and I dont spend half the day shuffling my tights back up.

The corset helps my back when standing or walking for long hours.

They have never batted an eyelid since.

I will wear tights on windy days though....for obvious reasons.

I think they are only sexualised if you make them so, and an innocent child would not know the difference.

So, do you think it is inappropriate for people to be seen wearing them day to day, or is it purely a sexual thing and would it make you uncomfortable to see it? X

local, but not too local

It’s just the Daily Mail readers getting upset at their pants twitching / fear of their partner having some sort of sexual awakening.

I prefer stockings, I find having reasonably long legs that if I wear tights I'm constantly pulling them up.

I didn't see the issue with dua lipa wearing them. If the kids had been watching I doubt they would have even noticed

Maybe part of it but I am more focused on whether they think it is inappropriate for children to see

I saw her last night and thought she looked amazing and it just added something extra to her outfit. I think it is something people in the entertainment industry can get away with more than if you saw someone down the local like that.

I think it depends how they are worn and what with. I guess for me they are not something I wear everyday so I do associate them with being sexy.

Kx

It’s just another example of stupid people with too much time on their hands and no lives of their own.

When I was young my mom and most women for that matter wore stockings and suspenders, it’s just clothing ffs.

It wouldn't bother me if my children had been watching. I think it is more about the context and that was like a costume. It's no worse than what they see in some music videos.

local, but not too local

This is what I’m driving at, they’re choosing to sexualise it and judge. And then complaining that kids are, what, thinking it’s ok? Getting upset?

Honestly some folk are just out to be offended.

Stockings per se? No.

Stockings so that the suspenders are visible under a far too short skirt?

Also no.

A skirt that short that your thong is showing?

Also no.

Is it time that we stop blaming women for dressing "provocatively" and accept the problem lies with men that think how a woman dresses absolves men of responsibility?

Stockings are just long socks. Men used to wear them years ago with britches....

I don't think it's inappropriate at all, it's like saying you shouldn't wear knickers every day because you wear them in a sexual capacity sometimes.

I've known plenty of women over the years who wear stockings in humdrum everyday life...for all manner of reasons from tights causing recurring bouts of thrush to simply finding stockings more comfortable.

I still dont think it matters for the point I was making.

Adults in the local may see them sexual, but do you think it is inappropriate for children to see them?

La la land

I remember my art teacher in primary school used to wear them. We as a few girls noticed so she showed us the clips. She said they didn't fall and roll down like tights and were more comfortable. So that has always been my attitude towards them.

Exactly. Just because an adult sees it that way, doesnt mean a child would think it. To most kids they prefer the colours and patterns lol

That is the perfect way to handle it. Matter of fact. If you shy away from it or get embarrassed then they would wonder why?

Straight up facts to why you choose to wear them, because believe me, I dont wear them to be sexy round tesco

I have always had a thing, for ladies that wear stockings. Remembering my childhood, and not so much now. If a lady was wearing stockings on TV. I would dissapear to the bathroom. But only because this I perceived, was a turn on for me.

For some, a lady wearing a black leather coat is a turn on....cum to think of it. Should leather coats be banned? Nope. But imho....stockings are very close to the line. But from my point of view. So very glad, ladies of all ages, continue to wear them. Especially RHT's.

I wear hold ups or stockings every day under my dresses or skirts as I don't wear trousers at all.

My kids have seen me in various underware sets/stockings and have never questioned it.

I'm not doing anything sexual in that scenario by wearing it so no harm is being done.

I was born in 1956. My mum wire stockings and a girdle as every day wear. Tights were a very new thing and quite expensive by the time I got to the age that socks were no longer appropriate. I think stockings and corsets have become sexualised in recent years and people struggle to differentiate between people people who are just wearing them and people who are wearing them for sexual reasons. Hence the posts from guys who assume that any woman wearing stockings is doing so for men's pleasure.

Dare I say this. I don't think they should as sexualised as they are and should be everyday wear and be something kids wouldn't bat an eyelid at.

The only thing I would struggle with is if my children in later life associated me wearing stockings in a sexualised sense. Particularly if I wore them around a male child. And that in itself is a worry as a result of stockings being sexualised and the fact that later in life the male child would be subjected to that sexualisation beyond my control.

Ok, so this follows on from my comment where I thought it was inappropriate.

Yes she looked great - she is young, has a lovely figure, could wear a bin bag & still look gorgeous.

Yes it was part of a costume.

Yes people appear on stage wearing less.

Yes women (well everyone) should wear whatever they want.

I wear stockings & suspenders, they are more practical, comfortable & hygienic than tights, my sons have seen me wearing them (many years ago now), but would you walk round the streets with your suspenders showing?

I can't stand tights, so I wear stockings under my trousers or jeans. Hold-ups never hold up on my massive thighs, so it's always stockings and suspenders.

It's not a sexual thing for me, although sometimes I wear them to feel like I've made an effort and to give me a bit of a boost, in the same way I'll wear particular bits of jewellery or a particular perfume.

i’ve just watched the performance and think the prudes that are complaining need to re examine their thought process for a few reasons

1. how are female artists supposed to win , they get slated for showing too much flesh, and yet dua shows no skin other than a tiny amount of thigh the entire performance and she is still getting crap for it

2. a brit award stage performance outfit isn’t every day wear - its a costume and none of the rest of it was overtly sexual or risque so if people have sexualised the stockings then that says more about their own thoughts

3. why should an adult performer actually have to censor their content/ clothing for children anyway? why is it their job to be appropriate for someone elses kids rather than the parents to decide what content they want to allow their kids to see

4. i feel like its just an extension of all the ways women are told they should mute themselves / body because it is sexualised by other people or the media - like the folk that get offended by public breast feeding, or the fact that mens nipples are ok on instagram but female nipples are banned - at the end of the day its a pair of tights with the top section missing - its not really all that sexual unless you make it so and then thats on you

oh i wasnt expecting to rant that much sorry

there are lots of things i wouldnt do because i dont think i can pull off the fashion of it while others do and i wouldnt bat an eyelid and thats how i see the suspenders showing in public thing

if you think about it the suspends sits mid to upper thigh depending how long your legs are - i see girls in shorts or dresses that show that part of their body all the time when the summer hits and its warmer , so why would a strap to hold up nylon in that same section of your leg suddenly make much difference

My 13 Yr old daughter told me they are coming back into fashion. She called it grandparent chic.

I asked her did she feel it was appropriate and her answer was interesting. She said that just because my generation had sexualised suspenders and tights that didn't mean her generation couldn't reclaim them.

She told me boomers were repressed and that gave them a sexual value. And my generation had copied that sexualisation because of movies.

Unfortunately so many things are sexualised in life ... it's the downside of fab for me in reality!

Clothes are just clothes, people sexualise them (including all people here)

Norfolk

Trouble is ,finding the ones that sit correctly and some can look too much with what else you add, so just depends on the outfit and scenario, I do like a good fitting not over done pair with a corset and stilettos
