The Cerne Abbas Giant (carved into chalk with huge cock in Dorset) is now reckoned to be Anglo Saxon rather than Celtic. But nobody still knows who or what is was meant to represent.

Any ideas?

Fertility symbol possibly?

There are cave paintings of men tearing about with erections. I made a fool of myself in an archaeology lesson because I thought they were sticks

The right place

I suspect further excavations might reveal a giant sky remote carved in chalk.

"I suspect further excavations might reveal a giant sky remote carved in chalk. "

And a note from Mrs Cerne-Abbas saying

'for Christ's sake Barry, put it away!'

On a mooch

Some think it was carved after a monastery came to the area, as an insult to religion and its ways.

Yes, it just goes to show that men have always loved showing off their willies. Nothing changes.

That's interesting. There's a figure on a hill in Sussex, the Long Man of Wilmington but he's missing the vital bit
