How much do you give away ? When you post on Forum are you an open book or do you sit in the reserved camp? Would you say that changes when you message people and chat directly?

Please share as much as you like

This thread is run with help of lovely LeoBlooms, so you might get replies from either of us

I'm definitely in the reserved camp on Forum and very selective about what I give away. But that soon changes as I get to know people more directly, not quite an open book but still a decent page turner.

I was going through a divorce the first time I joined and in emotional turmoil, although I didn't realise at the time to what extent. I wore my heart on my sleeve and was emotionally needy and vulnerable, oversharing and generally seeking validation in the wrong places. A couple of people took advantage of that. I'm in a much healthier place now and don't feel the need to seek validation from anyone other than myself.

"How about if you meet in socials, is that quite different? (I've not been so genuinely curious)."

Socials like the big gatherings? Well most people are rather excitable and talk about shared things - Fab, how good it is to meet you, how they are finding Fab... basic, generic questions. Most people go to have a good time, a couple of drinks and want to talk but it's not really the time for deeper conversations if that makes sense?

As far as one to one (or one to two socials), even then I'm a bit guarded. It's easy to deflect questions away from yourself and most people are happy to talk about themselves, which I like, don't get me wrong.

As far as one to one (or one to two socials), even then I'm a bit guarded. It's easy to deflect questions away from yourself and most people are happy to talk about themselves, which I like, don't get me wrong. "

Thanks Meli, yes I meant the big social gatherings, and keeping it fun and lighter there definitely makes sense.

Deflection..is that a half way point between reveal and reserve?

I give away bit and pieces here and there. Sometimes I just blab because thats what mood dictates.

I give away hints. I overuse grin emoji if I don't want to be taken too seriously. But together they still are just little crumbs. I keep the majority of the loaf (love and loathe) for the ones who are hungry to know more. And listen to the more truthful/accurate version of me.

On the forums far less open than I may have been in the past,...but then I'm here far less than I used to be...

Now I mostly just log in read and wander back to the cave.

Those who might want to know me have to get past my guarded nature, that was probably always the case, but now I rarely post anything meaningful in the forums, and private messages don't often come my way.

Away from here, in the "real world" I'm usually far more at ease...

Thanks for sharing that.

I think that’s how I’ve always felt what you’ve described but people accused me of being closed. How odd. I feel only those I share my life with are the ones who are privy to all of me and the superficial me should be enough for everyone else.

I suppose the only difference how superficial is superficial. I think I’m fairly open but not wholly so.

Yes, the big socials are meant for fun and lightness really. They are really interesting, one day you should attend one! It's a field day for people watching.

I'd never considered deflection to be on that scale before, it's more a learned behaviour borne out of experience and bias.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly reserved but perhaps I am. Revealing requires trust, the knowledge the other is listening and interested in you and won't use information as a weapon. The few I know accept me as the whole and not the facets I still don't share all with.

And this has been me sharing a lot behind my thought processes on a Sunday morning.

I haven’t experienced information about what I reveal being weaponised and can’t imagine why people would do such a thing.

What is it they do with what you have shared that makes it a weapon? I understand very obvious threats such as revealing who you are to your family and friends but I suspect people mean that it’s being used in a more subtle manner.

"I probably share too much. I'm an open book.

I really enjoy your Forum contributions, those chapters in the book.

Thanks Leo I appreciate that. Sometimes I bore myself though. Or I get frustrated because it feels like you are shouting into the wind and no one can hear you or is listening

Or you just hear echo of your own words. But those days pass. And someone comes sits and actually listens. I hope. "

I have had one or two really cool people reach out and let me know that they hear and that really helped. One aspect of my personality is what I call Irrational Confidence Guy. He has taken over post writing duties. He just assumes he's interesting and wise.

I like I.C.G.

And I think that would make an excellent thread in itself. We didn't think too many questions in OP would do thread any good this time. Just wanted to narrow it down. thanks for getting so beautifully involved in this one. All of you.

Oh that's far too much sharing for this thread.
